Auckland to Rotorua via Waitomo and Hobbiton: One-Way Tours and Self-Drive Plan
See the Waitomo glowworms and Hobbiton on the way from Auckland to Rotorua: one-way tours that carry your luggage, the best self-drive order, real drive times and summer tips.

Yes, you can see the Waitomo glowworms and the Hobbiton Movie Set between Auckland and Rotorua in one day. For most summer travellers the easiest way is a one-way tour that picks you up in Auckland and drops you and your bags at your Rotorua hotel in the evening. If you’re driving, go Waitomo first, then Hobbiton, then Rotorua: about 370 km and five hours at the wheel. Doing Hobbiton first adds about 40 km and ends the day with the slow two-hour drive from Waitomo to Rotorua.
Most North Island trips have a transfer day here anyway. The direct drive is 226 km, about 2 hours 31 minutes according to Rome2rio, through motorway and dairy farms. Swapping it for the glowworm grotto and the Shire costs you about two extra hours of driving and puts you in Rotorua by early evening. Hobbiton slots sell out from December to February, so book it before anything else. The calendar below is for the one-way version of a well-reviewed Hobbiton and Waitomo tour with lunch, which you can book from Auckland to Rotorua or the other way round.
Prices and times were checked on October 20 and 28, 2026. Operator prices are in NZ$; GetYourGuide and Viator prices are in US$ and move with the exchange rate.
Quick answers
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is Waitomo on the way to Rotorua? | Not really. It’s a detour to the west. Auckland → Waitomo → Rotorua is about 349 km against 226 km direct, so expect around two extra hours of driving. |
| Is Hobbiton on the way? | Almost. The Shire’s Rest near Matamata is about 78 km and 1 to 1¼ hours from Rotorua (Hobbiton’s own map says 45 minutes). |
| Can you do Hobbiton and Waitomo in one day? | Yes. Every combo tour does it, with the 45-minute Glowworm Cave tour and the 2.5-hour Hobbiton tour. |
| Best one-way tour? | Cheeky Kiwi Travel’s small-group Auckland: to Rotorua via Hobbiton & Waitomo 1-Way Tour: 13 hours, from about $255 (4.8/5 from 25 reviews) |
| Cheapest way with both? | The GreatSights coach (from NZ$369) or InterCity’s version (NZ$382–400 on the dates we checked; no hotel pickup, non-refundable) |
| Bus only, no tour? | Not practical in a day. InterCity’s Rotorua–Waitomo coach runs from Rotorua to Waitomo only (“Reverse trip not available”). |
| Christmas? | Hobbiton and Ruakuri close on December 25, Spellbound on December 25 and 26. Discover Waitomo’s terms say its other experiences open every day of the year. |
| Summer daylight | Sunset in Hamilton is 8:25pm on December 1 and reaches its latest, 8:44pm, on January 5. |
If you have a spare day in Auckland before you leave or a free morning in Rotorua after you arrive, there’s plenty more to book: geothermal parks and Māori cultural evenings in Rotorua, black water rafting at Waitomo, and day trips from Auckland to Hobbiton and the coast.
Is Waitomo on the way from Auckland to Rotorua?
No. Waitomo is a detour to the west that adds about two hours of driving. Hobbiton is very nearly on the way.
Picture a triangle. Auckland is at the top. Waitomo sits at the bottom-left corner in the limestone King Country, south of Hamilton. Rotorua is the bottom-right corner on the volcanic plateau. Discover Waitomo’s driving-times table puts Waitomo 202 km (2.5 hours) from Auckland and 147 km (2 hours) from Rotorua. Rome2rio puts the direct Auckland–Rotorua drive at 226 km and about 2 hours 31 minutes. Allow closer to three hours in holiday traffic.
Hobbiton is the useful part. The Shire’s Rest (501 Buckland Road, Hinuera, near Matamata) sits about two-thirds of the way along the Waitomo–Rotorua side. It’s about 90 km and an hour and a half from Waitomo, and about 78 km on to Rotorua, which takes 1 to 1¼ hours. Hobbiton’s own map says 45 minutes for that last leg, which we think is optimistic in summer traffic. So adding Hobbiton to a Waitomo day costs very little extra distance.
Our take: if you’re going to Waitomo anyway, Hobbiton adds very little. If you only have time for one stop on a transfer day, Hobbiton is the smaller detour, and Waitomo gives you more for each extra minute if glowworms are what you came for.

Our pick: Cheeky Kiwi Travel’s one-way small-group tour
It’s the only small-group tour we found that visits both attractions and is built as a one-way transfer with luggage. You ride in a 16-seat Mercedes minibus. The guide stops for coffee in Pirongia, drives through Ōtorohanga, pauses outside the Big Bird farm on the way to Hobbiton, rolls through Tīrau’s corrugated-iron sculptures, and finishes with a 20-minute drive past Rotorua’s lakefront, Government Gardens and Blue Baths before dropping you at your hotel. Entry and fully guided tours at both Waitomo and Hobbiton are included, along with snacks, water and a Green Dragon drink. Booster seats are provided for children aged 7 and under. One reviewer summed up the main draw: “With this tour, you and your luggage will arrive at your new hotel effortlessly after a fantastic day.”
The $255 one-way Cheeky Kiwi tour on GetYourGuide has 4.8/5 from 25 reviews so far, a small sample, so read a few before you book.
Before you book:
- It’s a long day. One reviewer wrote that the guide “took care of us from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.”
- You buy your own lunch at Hobbiton.
- GetYourGuide lists it as not suitable for wheelchair users.
- Reviewers score value for money lower than the guide and the transport.
- The reverse direction (Rotorua → Auckland) runs only “on selected dates”.
Cheeky Kiwi also sells the same tour on Viator as the Auckland to Rotorua via Hobbiton & Waitomo 1-Way Small Group Tour (5.0/5 from 27 reviews, from about $261).
The bigger-group alternative on GetYourGuide
The $292 Hobbiton and Waitomo tour with lunch runs as a return day trip from Auckland or Rotorua, but the listing also lets you book it one way, from Auckland to Rotorua or from Rotorua to Auckland, with drop-off at your hotel. It has 4.8/5 from 401 reviews, far more than any other one-way option, and lunch is included. It costs about $37 more than Cheeky Kiwi’s GetYourGuide price. Choose it if you want lunch sorted and a well-tested operator, and Cheeky Kiwi if a smaller group and the Rotorua drive-by matter more to you. Ask about the luggage allowance when you book.
Budget pick: GreatSights’ Waitomo and Hobbiton Experience
Timetable (operator):
| Time | Stop |
|---|---|
| 7:30am | Hotel pickups start |
| 7:45am | Check in, Sky City Coach Terminal |
| 8:00am | Leave Auckland |
| 11:00am | Waitomo Glowworm Caves, 45-minute guided tour and boat ride |
| 12:30pm | Leave Waitomo; picnic lunch on board |
| 2:00pm | Hobbiton Movie Set guided tour |
| 5:00pm | Leave Hobbiton |
| 6:15pm | Arrive in Rotorua; hotel drop-offs from 6:25pm |
From NZ$369 you get both tickets, lunch, hotel pickup and drop-off, Wi-Fi, and free cancellation up to 2 hours before departure. You book it on the GreatSights website; the one-way version isn’t on GetYourGuide. GreatSights’ return coach from Auckland is, as the From Auckland: Waitomo & Hobbiton Coach Tour with Lunch (4.7/5 from 890 reviews, from $264).
Before you book:
- It’s a full-size coach, not a minibus.
- If the Glowworm Cave can’t operate, you’re upgraded to Ruakuri Cave “subject to availability”, and “the Waitomo Caves portion is non refundable”. That matters in a wet summer; our guide to rain cancellations and refunds covers what each operator does.
- GreatSights’ separate Waitomo-only “Glowworm Express” from Auckland to Rotorua shows “this tour is not currently operating”. Ignore third-party listings that still sell it.
InterCity’s near-identical version (IC16WHR) costs NZ$382–400 on the dates we checked. It has no hotel pickup (“our great value InterCity day tours don’t include hotel pickup and drop-off”), and InterCity says “our day tours are non-refundable”. Choose it only if you’re travelling on an InterCity FlexiPass or TravelPass.
Conflicting timetables: a Gray Line listing for what looks like the same coach shows a 7:45am departure from 102 Hobson Street, Waitomo at 10:30am and Rotorua (1167 Fenton Street) at 6:15pm. GreatSights’ own page says 8:00am and 11:00am. Go by the time on your confirmation.
Upgrade pick: a private one-way tour
NZ Tours’ private Auckland to Rotorua tour via Waitomo and Hobbiton gives you a Mercedes and a driver-guide from about 8am to 7pm, on a flexible schedule. You still join the standard group tours at each attraction. It costs NZ$934–1,634 per adult depending on group size, according to the operator’s newzealand.com listing. It suits families of four or more, and anyone who wants to stop when they like.
Adding Te Puia: the Trilogy package
Te Puia sells a Trilogy Package that bundles tickets for Hobbiton, Te Puia’s Te Pō evening experience and the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. It’s tickets only, with no transport, so it suits self-drivers. Tripadvisor lists it from about NZ$290. Te Pō must be pre-booked. The listing gives a 4:30pm daily start, which doesn’t fit after an afternoon Hobbiton tour on the same day, so check the current time with Te Puia before you plan around it.
Discover Waitomo also sells Experience the Trilogy Supercharged, which swaps the glowworm cave for Black Water Rafting’s Black Labyrinth. It costs NZ$497 adult and NZ$309 youth (12–15), and the Black Labyrinth runs Thursday to Sunday only, according to the deal page. Our Waitomo combo tours guide covers the other packages.
Going the other way: Rotorua to Auckland
- GreatSights’ Hobbiton Movie Set Tour (Rotorua to Auckland) leaves the Rotorua i-SITE at 8:15am, reaches Hobbiton at 9:30am with lunch and arrives at Sky City at 3:30pm. It doesn’t stop at Waitomo.
- GreatSights’ Hobbiton & Waitomo Experience (Rotorua to Auckland) currently says “this tour is not available”.
- The Hobbiton and Waitomo tour with lunch can be booked one way from Rotorua to Auckland.
- The Rotorua to Auckland Afternoon Transfer with Waitomo Glow Worms is a small-group transfer with door-to-door drop-off, from about $195 on Viator (4.3/5 from 22 reviews).
- Cheeky Kiwi’s both-attractions tour runs in reverse “on selected dates”.
Can you do it by bus or train without a tour?
Not in one day with both stops. Take a one-way tour, or stay a night in Waitomo.
| Mode | What exists | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| InterCity or GreatSights coach, Auckland → Waitomo | Morning coaches from the Sky City terminal on Hobson Street. Listings disagree on departure (7:30am, 7:45am and 8:45am all appear) and on arrival at Waitomo (about 10:30am to 12:40pm). | Fine for getting to Waitomo. Check InterCity’s live timetable. |
| InterCity, Rotorua → Waitomo | Leaves the Rotorua i-SITE, 1167 Fenton Street, at 7:45am, about 2 hours 25 minutes, with an optional cave tour. The page says “Reverse trip not available”. | Rotorua → Waitomo only |
| Waitomo → Rotorua by InterCity | No direct service. Rome2rio routes it via Hamilton in about 3 hours 45 minutes. | Slow |
| Thermal Land Shuttle (Rotorua) | Leaves the Rotorua i-SITE at 7:30am, reaches Waitomo at 9:30am, leaves at 3:30pm and is back at 5:30pm. One way (Rotorua to Waitomo only) NZ$80, return NZ$145. | A good day trip from Rotorua |
| Waitomo Wanderer (Headfirst Travel) | Transport to Waitomo from Rotorua or Taupō, with cave-activity bundles | Day trips from Rotorua |
| Te Huia train, Auckland Strand ↔ Hamilton Frankton | Hamilton & Waikato Tourism gives an “estimated running time of 2 hours 30 minutes from Frankton to The Strand”. It runs twice a day on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, three times on Thursday and Friday, and once on Sunday. | Gets you to Hamilton only. You still need a car or shuttle to Waitomo or Hobbiton. |
| Kiwi Experience Northern Highlights (hop-on hop-off) | Hot Water Beach → Waitomo (overnight) → Rotorua, with an optional Hobbiton stop | Good for backpackers. The Waitomo sector runs southbound only. |
Klook also sells a shared transfer between Auckland and Waitomo. For the Rotorua side of the trip, our guide to Waitomo from Rotorua and Hamilton covers the shuttles and day tours in more detail.
Self-drive: Auckland → Waitomo → Hobbiton → Rotorua
Which order is best?
| Order | Approx. driving | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auckland → Waitomo → Hobbiton → Rotorua ✅ | About 370 km, about 5 hours | Least backtracking, an easy last hour into Rotorua, and the same order the tours use | An early start to reach Waitomo by about 9:30am |
| Auckland → Hobbiton → Waitomo → Rotorua | About 410 km, 5.5–6 hours | Hobbiton first, while you’re fresh | Ends with the 147 km, two-hour “maze of country roads” (a Tripadvisor regular’s phrase) from Waitomo to Rotorua when you’re tired |
| Split over 2 days (Auckland → Waitomo overnight → Hobbiton → Rotorua) | Same as row 1 | Time for Ruakuri or black water rafting and an unhurried morning | An extra night’s accommodation |
Leg figures come from Discover Waitomo’s driving-times table and Rome2rio’s routes to and from the Hobbiton Movie Set. Totals are our sums; check Google Maps or the NZTA journey planner on the day.
The legs
- Auckland → Waitomo (202 km, about 2.5 hours). Take SH1 south onto the Waikato Expressway to Hamilton. From there head south through Te Awamutu and Ōtorohanga (SH39 or SH3), turn onto SH37 for the last stretch to Waitomo village, then follow Waitomo Caves Road to the Glowworm Caves.
- Waitomo → Hobbiton (about 90 km, about 1.5 hours). Head back through Ōtorohanga, Te Awamutu and Cambridge to the Shire’s Rest, 501 Buckland Road, Hinuera. There’s “ample free parking”, including a few spaces for campervans.
- Hobbiton → Rotorua (about 78 km, 1 to 1¼ hours). Go via Tīrau, then SH5 to Rotorua.
Sample summer timetable, Waitomo first
| Time | What | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 6:45am | Leave central Auckland | Beats the worst of the motorway traffic |
| About 9:15am | Arrive at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves | Tours run every 30 minutes from 9:00am |
| 9:30am | Glowworm Cave tour (45 minutes) | Pre-book: NZ$85 adult |
| 10:45am | Drive to Hobbiton | Coffee in Ōtorohanga or Cambridge |
| About 12:15pm | Arrive at the Shire’s Rest; lunch at the café | Check in at least 20 minutes before your slot |
| 1:00pm | Hobbiton Signature Tour (2.5 hours) | NZ$130 adult; most visitors spend 3–3.5 hours on site |
| About 3:45pm | Drive to Rotorua | Expect summer congestion on SH1 between Tīrau and Karāpiro |
| About 4:45–5pm | Check in, Rotorua | Hours of daylight left: Hamilton sunset is 8:25pm on December 1 and 8:44pm on January 5 |
You can book the Glowworm Cave ticket direct at waitomo.com or on Viator as the Waitomo Glowworm Caves Guided Tour (4.4/5 from more than 1,250 reviews, from about $49). The Hobbiton ticket is on GetYourGuide as the Hobbiton Movie Set: Guided Tour Ticket (4.9/5 from more than 9,000 reviews, from about $73).
Ruakuri variant: swap the 45-minute Glowworm Cave for Ruakuri Cave (1.5 hours; tours from 10:00am, last tour 3:30pm; check in 30 minutes before at the separate Ruakuri centre, 204 Tumutumu Road). Ruakuri is booked direct at waitomo.com or on Viator as the 90-Minute Guided Ruakuri Cave Tour Waitomo (4.8/5 from 201 reviews, from about $71). Then book a later Hobbiton slot, around 2:30–3:00pm, which brings you into Rotorua around 6:30–7pm. Or take Discover Waitomo’s Most Popular Combo (Glowworm Cave and Ruakuri, from NZ$179) and push Hobbiton to the next morning. Our Glowworm Cave vs Ruakuri comparison, tickets guide, opening hours and Waitomo prices guide cover the details.
Book Hobbiton first. Hobbiton’s booking terms say “December - February is our peak season and many days are fully booked” and that it is “unable to offer a waitlist for our tours”. The Waitomo Glowworm Caves run every 30 minutes, so they’re easier to fit around your Hobbiton slot. Hobbiton doesn’t publish its first and last summer departure times on its website; you only see them in the booking calendar. Our Hobbiton Movie Set tours page covers tickets and the other ways to visit.
Driving tips for summer
- Licence rules change on November 1, 2026. NZTA says you can currently drive on an overseas car licence for 18 months, but “from 1 November 2026, this will be reduced from 18 months to 12 months from the day you last arrived in New Zealand.” If your licence isn’t in English, carry an accurate English translation or an International Driving Permit, plus the original licence.
- Holiday traffic. NZTA’s Waikato holiday hotspots include SH1 between Tīrau and Karāpiro, your Hobbiton–Rotorua leg if you route via Cambridge. NZTA’s Holiday Journeys planner publishes predicted peak times for the Christmas and New Year getaway. Leave Auckland early.
- One-way rental fees. Picking up in Auckland and dropping off in Rotorua is common, but the fees vary a lot. One older Tripadvisor quote was NZ$135 for overseas visitors; some comparison sites cite NZ$200–500 for regional drop-offs. Compare the total including the fee, and look at relocation deals such as Transfercar.
- Campervans. Hobbiton has limited large-vehicle parking, and the roads in Waitomo village are narrow. Plan a night at a Waitomo holiday park instead of doing all three stops in one day.
- Tolls. As far as we know, none of the legs above use a toll road; New Zealand’s toll roads are north of Auckland and around Tauranga. Check NZTA’s toll-road map if your route changes.
Is it feasible in one day? Realistic timings
| Scenario | Time at attractions | Driving | Total day | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Glowworm Cave + Hobbiton (self-drive) | About 3.5–4 hours including check-ins | About 5 hours | About 10–11 hours | ✅ Comfortable in summer |
| Ruakuri + Hobbiton (self-drive) | About 5 hours | About 5 hours | About 11–12 hours | ⚠️ Doable; tight if traffic is bad |
| Glowworm Cave + Ruakuri + Hobbiton | About 6.5 hours | About 5 hours | 12 hours or more | ❌ Split over 2 days |
| Tour (GreatSights) | Included | Included | 10h30 (Auckland 8:00am → Rotorua 6:15pm) | ✅ Easiest |
| Tour (Cheeky Kiwi small group) | Included, plus the Rotorua drive | Included | About 12–13 hours | ✅ Most complete |
Luggage if you’re driving: it stays in the car, but keep valuables out of sight at every car park. Luggage on foot or on a tour: Hobbiton’s terms say large or bulky bags “may not be permitted” on its buses or the tour, but “luggage can be stored in a locked storage area at The Shire’s Rest”. Prams must fold fully and fit the bus luggage compartment.
Make it two days: the better summer version
Night 1 in Waitomo means an evening glowworm walk at Ruakuri Scenic Reserve, a morning Ruakuri or black water rafting trip, then Hobbiton in the afternoon and dinner in Rotorua. Our guide to where to stay near Waitomo Caves compares the village, Ōtorohanga and Hamilton.
Night 1 in Matamata or Cambridge suits an early Hobbiton slot and quieter roads.
Stops along the way (check opening hours before you go):
- Hamilton Gardens, Hamilton, on the Auckland–Waitomo leg
- Ōtorohanga Kiwi House, Ōtorohanga, 15 minutes from Waitomo
- Te Waihou Walkway and the Blue Spring, Putāruru, a detour off the Hobbiton–Rotorua leg
- Tīrau, the corrugated-iron town, a coffee stop on the way to Rotorua
- Cambridge, with tree-lined streets and cafés, between Waitomo and Hobbiton
- Pirongia, a village coffee stop that Cheeky Kiwi uses
