2 Days in Waitomo: A Summer Itinerary with Caves, Te Anga Road and Free Glowworms
An hour-by-hour 2-day Waitomo plan for summer: the Ruakuri and Glowworm Cave combo, Mangapohue, Piripiri Cave and Marokopa Falls on Te Anga Road, the free night glowworm walk, costs and Christmas closures.
Give Waitomo two days in summer. On Day 1, book Discover Waitomo’s Most Popular Combo (Ruakuri Cave plus the Waitomo Glowworm Cave, adults from NZD 179) for an early-afternoon slot, eat at Huhu, then walk the free DOC Ruakuri Walk after about 9:30pm to see wild glowworms. On Day 2, drive Te Anga Road west to Mangapohue Natural Bridge (25 km), Piripiri Cave (28–29 km) and Marokopa Falls (31 km), all free, and spend the afternoon on a second cave, an adventure trip or the drive onward.
Most people “do” Waitomo in 90 minutes: a coach pulls in, they float through the Glowworm Grotto, and they’re back on the motorway before afternoon tea. They miss the best part. Stay one night in summer and you can walk through Ruakuri’s spiral entrance in the afternoon, eat dinner while the sun is still up (sunset is 8:44–8:46pm around Christmas, according to Metcheck), and once full darkness settles in, walk a free bush track 4 km from the village that glows like a second Grotto. All it costs is a torch.
The next morning, Te Anga Road takes you west through limestone country to a 17-metre natural arch, a free cave you explore on your own and Marokopa Falls, a 35 m waterfall that DOC says is “often described as one of the most beautiful in the country.” Below is the plan hour by hour, with versions for adrenaline-seekers, families and rainy days, and a budget version where the only thing you pay for is dinner. Prices are in NZD including GST, from the operators’ own sites; Discover Waitomo’s prices apply from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027.
Ruakuri is the cave Day 1 starts with, and you can book it on its own if the combo is sold out. The calendar is for the Waitomo Caves: Ruakuri Cave 1.5-Hour Guided Tour on GetYourGuide (4.7/5 from 1,409 reviews, from $65).
Quick answers
- How long should you spend in Waitomo? One night at least. Two nights if you want adventure caving or the coast.
- Is one day enough? Yes for one or two caves. Not if you also want the free night glowworms and Te Anga Road.
- Can you see glowworms for free? Yes. DOC says the Ruakuri Walk shows glowworms at night, “best beside the main bridge.”
- When is it dark enough in summer? Metcheck puts sunset at 8:44pm on 21 December and 8:46pm on 25 December, and civil twilight ends about 9:15pm. Go from about 9:30pm.
- Is Marokopa Falls worth the drive? Yes. It’s a 35 m waterfall on a 20-minute track that DOC grades “Easiest”, with a free cave and a natural arch on the same road.
- What catches people out in summer? Ruakuri and black water rafting don’t run on Christmas Day, Spellbound’s newzealand.com listing says it is “Closed Christmas and Boxing Day,” and holiday slots sell out.
- What can go wrong on the road? Te Anga Road had slips and repairs through 2025–26 (Waitomo District Council), so check its status on the morning you drive. DOC warns of tomos (deep holes) and steep drops on the night walk: bring a torch and stay on the track.
Waitomo sits between Auckland, Hamilton and Rotorua, so many two-day visitors also fit in Hobbiton Movie Set at Matamata, day trips from Auckland that pair Hobbiton with the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, black water rafting in the Ruakuri system or Rotorua’s geothermal parks.
How many days do you need in Waitomo?
Two days is the best balance. One day works for caves only, and a third day adds adventure caving and the coast.
| Time | What it realistically covers | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Half day / day trip | Glowworm Cave boat tour (45 min plus 30 min check-in), maybe the Ruakuri Walk by daylight | Auckland day-trippers and Hobbiton combos such as the From Auckland: Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves Day Trip with Lunch (4.9/5 from 3,082 reviews, from $202); see our Hobbiton and Waitomo guide |
| 1 day + 1 night | Ruakuri and Glowworm Cave combo, dinner, free night glowworm walk | Couples short on time |
| 2 days (our pick) | All of the above, plus Te Anga Road (arch, cave, falls) and one extra: Spellbound, the Kiwi House or the Black Labyrinth | Most visitors |
| 3 days | All of the above, plus a 4–5 hour adventure caving trip (Black Abyss, Haggas Honking Holes, Lost World) and the Marokopa or Kiritehere coast, or Kāwhia’s hot water beach at low tide | Adventure travellers, road-trippers |
The second day adds no more caves. It adds the free things, the night walk and Te Anga Road, and those are what people remember. Our things to do in Waitomo guide lists everything else in the area.
Our pick: the classic 2-day summer itinerary
Best for: first-timers, couples and groups with mixed fitness. Assumes: you arrive from Auckland (about 2.5 hours) or Hamilton (about 1 hour) and stay in or near Waitomo village.
Day 1: two caves, dinner and free glowworms
| Time | What | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 9:30am | Leave Auckland (or 11:00am from Hamilton) | Allow about 2.5 hours from Auckland. See getting to Waitomo |
| 12:00pm | Lunch in the village | The Waitomo Glowworm Caves Café opens 8am–4pm daily (closed Christmas Day) |
| 1:00pm | Check in at the Ruakuri Visitor Centre (Tumutumu Rd, not the main visitor centre) | Discover Waitomo requires check-in 30 minutes before every tour |
| 1:30pm | Ruakuri Cave tour (1.5 hours) | Spiral entrance, close-up glowworms, photography in designated areas, wheelchair accessible |
| 3:00pm | Drive about 3 km back to the main visitor centre (39 Waitomo Village Rd) | Don’t skip this: the two caves check in at different sites |
| 3:30pm | Check in for the Glowworm Cave | |
| 4:00pm | Waitomo Glowworm Cave (45 minutes) | The famous boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto |
| 5:00pm | Check into your accommodation and rest | See where to stay near Waitomo Caves |
| 6:30pm | Dinner at Huhu (book ahead in summer) | See “Where to eat in Waitomo” below |
| 9:30pm | Free night glowworm walk: the Ruakuri Walk | A 5-minute drive. Bring a torch and sturdy shoes. The best glowworms are beside the main bridge (DOC) |
| 10:30pm | Back to bed |
Book it: the Most Popular Combo is sold direct on waitomo.com, from NZD 179 for an adult. GetYourGuide doesn’t sell the combo ticket on its own. If you’re coming from Auckland without a car, the Waitomo Glowworm and Ruakuri Caves Day Tour covers both caves with pickup ($265, 4.7/5 from only 8 reviews, so treat the rating as early).
Why this order? Ruakuri’s last departure is mid-afternoon (3:30pm in operator listings), while the Glowworm Cave runs tours through the day until 5pm. Do Ruakuri first and keep the flexible tour second. If you’re running late, you can still catch the Glowworm Cave.
Day 2: Te Anga Road, with an arch, a cave and a waterfall
| Time | What | Distance from village (DOC) | Time on site |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8:00am | Breakfast. Pack water, snacks, a torch and a full tank | — | — |
| 8:45am | Drive west on Te Anga Road | — | — |
| 9:15am | Mangapohue Natural Bridge | 25 km | 20–30 min |
| 10:00am | Piripiri Cave | 28–29 km | 15–30 min |
| 10:30am | Marokopa Falls | 31 km | 20–30 min |
| 11:15am | Option A: return to the village (about 35 minutes). Option B: continue to Marokopa village and the coast | Marokopa about 50 km | 1–2 hours |
| 12:30pm | Lunch back in the village (or a picnic on the coast) | — | — |
| 2:00pm | Pick one: Spellbound (2 h 25 min to 2 h 45 min), the Ōtorohanga Kiwi House (on the way out), or drive on | — | — |
Add a second glowworm cave: Spellbound’s Glowworm & Cave Explorer (NZD 109 direct on glowworm.co.nz) runs small groups of up to 12 per departure in a separate cave system. From Auckland, GetYourGuide sells it as the Auckland: Spellbound, Waitomo Glowworm Caves Explorer Tour ($174, 4.8/5 from 166 reviews). Our guide to alternative glowworm cave tours compares Spellbound with Okohua (The Waitomo Experience: Okohua Glowworm Cave Tour, $151, 5.0/5 from 167 reviews) and the others.
Te Anga Road: every stop, distance and walk
Te Anga Road runs west from Waitomo village to the coast at Marokopa. DOC recommends combining its three free walks into one scenic drive.
| Stop | Distance from Waitomo village | Walk | Accessibility | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mangapohue Natural Bridge | 25 km (DOC) | About 20 minutes (DOC) | Pushchair-friendly boardwalk up to the arch; stairs after | A 17 m limestone arch, the remnant of an ancient cave. Stay in the reserve: there’s “no public access into the neighbouring farm” (DOC) |
| Piripiri Cave | 28–29 km (the council says 28 km, DOC 29 km) | About 5 minutes each way to the cave entrance | Stairs, slippery | Unlit and unguided, so you need a torch. Fossil oyster layers at the back (council) |
| Marokopa Falls | 31 km (DOC; the council says 30 km) | About 20 minutes (DOC) | Stairs in places, muddy after rain | 35 m falls and a small car park. “Do not go past barriers or fenced areas” (DOC) |
| Marokopa village and beach | About 50 km | — | — | A quiet bach settlement on a black-sand coast, with minimal services |
| Kiritehere Beach | Signposted before Marokopa | — | Unsealed access road | Black sand and rock outcrops. Check the road status |
| Kāwhia (alternative) | North from the Te Anga junction | — | — | Te Puia hot water beach, 2 hours either side of low tide. See below |
Driving notes
- Allow 2.5–3 hours for the three DOC stops and the return to the village, or 4–5 hours if you continue to the coast.
- Road conditions change. Waitomo District Council’s 2026 roading updates list Te Anga Road slips, flooding and fallen trees, plus repairs that began in March 2026. Check the council’s Roading Network Updates page and the NZTA Journey Planner on the morning you drive.
- No reliable services. We couldn’t find any fuel stop west of the village, so fill up in Ōtorohanga or Te Kūiti and carry food and water.
- Light: Marokopa Falls faces west, so the afternoon light is better for photos. Mornings are quieter.
Is Mangapohue open? (The 2022 closure)
It appears to be open again, but check before you go. DOC closed the Mangapohue Natural Bridge Walk on 10 October 2022 because of erosion of the bridge and falling debris, warning it was “difficult for DOC to put a timeframe on repairs.” We couldn’t find a DOC reopening notice. DOC’s current track page, though, describes an open, pushchair-friendly walk under the arch, Discover Waitomo’s itineraries list it as “Open 7 days, 24 hours,” and recent visitors describe reaching the viewing platform. The farm loop beyond the bridge appears to be out of use (a third-party report says it is signed closed), and DOC now says there’s no public access into the farm. Never climb past barriers.
The free night glowworm walk: timing and safety
Yes, you can see glowworms for free in Waitomo. Walk DOC’s Ruakuri Walk after dark; the best spot is beside the main bridge.
When is it dark enough in summer?
| Date (Waitomo Caves) | Sunset | Civil twilight ends | Go from |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 December | 8:27pm (Metcheck, 2026) | about 9:00pm | about 9:15pm |
| 21–25 December | about 8:44–8:46pm | about 9:15pm | about 9:30pm |
| 1–10 January | about 8:48pm | about 9:20pm | about 9:30–9:45pm |
Sunset times are Metcheck and timeanddate calculations for Waitomo Caves. The civil twilight figures are rounded estimates from timeanddate’s December data (an 8:42pm sunset gives a 9:14pm civil dusk), and the exact minutes shift a little each year. Glowworms show best once the sky is fully dark, which in late December takes until roughly 9:55pm (the end of nautical twilight).
Getting there
- The car park is 4 km from Waitomo Village. Head west, turn left at the roundabout onto Tumutumu Road, drive about 2 km and turn right at the signposted Ruakuri car park (DOC). You can also walk in from the village on the Waitomo Walkway.
- The full loop takes about 45 minutes, but glowworm-spotters often go only a few hundred metres to the riverside sections and the bridge.
- There are toilets and a grassy picnic area at the car park (DOC).
Safety (from DOC)
- Stay on the track and hold children’s hands. DOC warns of “big drop offs, tomos/deep holes and cave entrances,” plus fast-flowing streams.
- There are lots of steps, steep in places and often muddy and slippery. DOC says the walk suits only people with good mobility.
- Watch your head. Ceilings are low in places.
- Bring a torch, ideally with a red-light mode. Switch it off at the viewing spots and let your eyes adjust for a couple of minutes.
- Glowworm etiquette: no touching, no flash, and keep the noise down.
A second free spot: Mangapohue Natural Bridge also has glowworms at night. The travel blog Walk My World says “by night the area is transformed into a true glow worm wonderland,” and a Tripadvisor reviewer recommends coming “at night for a free view of glow worms inhabiting the walls of the ravine.” It’s 25 km out on a winding road, though, so go after dark only if you’ve driven it in daylight first.
Best for adventure: the adrenaline version
Swap the walking caves for an underground river and an abseil.
| Day 1 | Day 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Black Labyrinth black water rafting (3 hours, NZD 199). Check in 30 minutes early at 585 Waitomo Caves Rd and budget about 4 hours in total | Haggas Honking Holes (4–5 hours, NZD 350) or the Lost World Half Day (about 4 hours, a 100 m abseil, NZD 675) with Waitomo Adventures |
| Afternoon | Glowworm Cave (45 minutes, NZD 85): the boat-ride icon you’d otherwise miss | Te Anga Road, with the afternoon light at Marokopa Falls |
| Night | Ruakuri Walk glowworms | Dinner, or Mangapohue at night |
- Booking: the Black Labyrinth is on GetYourGuide as the Waitomo Caves: Labyrinth Black Water Rafting Experience (4.9/5 from 1,859 reviews), and the 5-hour Black Abyss (NZD 332 direct) as Black Abyss: The Legendary Black Water Tour (4.9/5 from 297 reviews). Haggas Honking Holes and both Lost World trips are sold only direct, on waitomo.co.nz.
- Age and weight rules are strict: the Black Labyrinth is 12+ and 45 kg+, the Black Abyss 16+ and 45 kg+ (Discover Waitomo). Waitomo Adventures sets 15+ for Haggas and the Lost World Epic (NZD 985), 10+ for the Lost World Half Day, and a 40 kg minimum.
- Bring swimwear and a towel for black water rafting. Wetsuits are provided.
- Read our Black Labyrinth review and our guide to which Waitomo tour to book.
Best for families
All-ages caves, a pushchair-friendly arch and kiwi in daylight.
| Day 1 | Day 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Arrive, then the Glowworm Cave (all ages; infants sit on a lap) | Mangapohue boardwalk (pushchair-friendly to the arch) and Marokopa Falls |
| Afternoon | Ruakuri Cave (wheelchair and pushchair access, 65 cm maximum width), or Waitomo Adventures’ Troll Cave (NZD 180 for a group of up to 8, booked direct on waitomo.co.nz) | Ōtorohanga Kiwi House (9am–5pm, last admission 4:15pm, closed 25 December; tickets valid for two days) |
| Night | A short, supervised Ruakuri Walk glowworm visit (mind the stairs) | Early night |
- The Kiwi House’s keeper talks on kiwi are at 10:30am, 1:30pm and 3:30pm, according to its Tripadvisor listing, so confirm on the day. Tickets are NZD 29.50 for an adult, and the family pass is NZD 75 (2 adults and 3 children), booked direct on kiwihouse.org.nz. If you’re coming from Auckland without a car, the Waitomo Glowworms, Blue Springs & Kiwi House day tour covers both ($187, 4.8/5 from 64 reviews).
- Piripiri Cave is very dark with slippery stairs, and some parents skip it with toddlers.
- There’s more in Waitomo with kids and our Waitomo school holidays family guide.
Budget version: Waitomo for (almost) free
Pay for one cave and do everything else for free.
- Day 1: the Waitomo Glowworm Cave (NZD 85) or Spellbound Essential (NZD 85), then the Waitomo Walkway by day and the Ruakuri Walk by night (free).
- Day 2: Te Anga Road: Mangapohue, Piripiri and Marokopa Falls (all free, DOC).
- Zero-ticket option: skip the paid cave entirely. The Ruakuri Walk at night is the best free glowworm display we know of in the district.
- Save on beds with a holiday park or a cabin. See where to stay near Waitomo Caves.
Rainy-day swap
Caves usually run in rain. River trips and the Te Anga Road drive are the ones affected.
- Usually unaffected: the Waitomo Glowworm Cave and Ruakuri, both dry walking caves. Aranui is a dry cave too, but it was closed for maintenance when we checked on 31 October 2026.
- Can be cancelled: Spellbound says it will cancel “at any time which the river becomes unsafe or we forecast that it is likely to flood.” Black water rafting depends on water levels. Waitomo Adventures says the Lost World Half Day is a dry trip, so it makes a good wet-weather adventure.
- Swap: move Te Anga Road to the drier day, and replace it with the Kiwi House plus Aranui Cave once it reopens (1 hour; the Twin Cave Combo with the Glowworm Cave is NZD 131). GetYourGuide lists the Aranui Cave 1-Hour Guided Tour (4.9/5 from only 24 reviews; check dates once it reopens).
- Upside: Marokopa Falls is at its fullest after rain. Drive only if the council shows Te Anga Road open, and expect mud on the tracks.
- Full refund rules are in our guide to Waitomo rain, cancellations and refunds.

Summer specifics: crowds, Christmas and booking
- Book ahead from mid-December to January. Discover Waitomo “highly recommend[s] booking in advance,” and Spellbound notes that its 12-person tours “fill quickly during holiday periods” and that “morning trips tend to fill first.”
- Summer hours: Discover Waitomo’s own Glowworm Cave page says the cave is open daily from 9am to 5pm, with tours departing several times a day. It doesn’t publish the last departure, so check it when you book. Our opening hours guide has the times for every cave.
- Christmas closures (check each year):
- Ruakuri Cave: no tours on Christmas Day (operator listings)
- Legendary Black Water Rafting: open 364 days, closed Christmas Day
- The Waitomo Glowworm Caves Café: closed 25 December
- Spellbound: closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day (its newzealand.com listing)
- Ōtorohanga Kiwi House: closed 25 December
- Glowworm Cave on 25 December: appears to operate, but this isn’t explicitly confirmed
- More detail: Waitomo Caves at Christmas and New Year
- Crowd tip: coach tours from Auckland usually arrive late morning. Early (9am) or late-afternoon Glowworm Cave slots tend to feel calmer, in our experience.
- Sun: New Zealand’s UV is fierce in summer even on cloudy days. Bring sunscreen and a hat for Te Anga Road and the coast, plus a warm layer for the caves. See what to wear in Waitomo Caves.
Where to eat in Waitomo
| Place | Best for | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Huhu Café (10 Waitomo Caves Rd) | The village’s best dinner: modern New Zealand food, with views | Listings conflict: Discover Waitomo says 7 days, 11:30am–9:30pm, while Tripadvisor shows it closed Monday and Tuesday and open 12pm to 8 or 9pm on other days. Book dinner |
| Waitomo Glowworm Caves Café & Restaurant | Lunch between tours | 8am–4pm daily, closed Christmas Day (Discover Waitomo) |
| Village general store and bar | Casual bites and drinks | Check opening times locally |
Tip: small-town kitchens close early. In summer, eat by about 8pm, then go glowworm-spotting.
Arriving from and continuing to
- From Auckland: about 2.5 hours via SH1 and SH3. See getting to Waitomo and Auckland to Rotorua via Waitomo and Hobbiton.
- From Hamilton: about 1 hour. From Rotorua: about 2 hours.
- Cruise passengers: Waitomo is a long day from Auckland’s port. See our Waitomo shore excursion guide.
- On to New Plymouth: SH3 through the Awakino Gorge was under stop/go traffic management in October 2026. NZTA scheduled night closures from 7pm to 4am, 27 October to 5 November 2026, and aims for two-lane access by mid-December. Check the Journey Planner.
- On to Taupō or Raglan: check the NZTA Journey Planner or Google Maps on the day for drive times.
Optional extra: Kāwhia’s Te Puia hot water beach
You can dig your own hot pool in black sand, but only around low tide. Geothermal water rises through Ocean Beach at the end of Te Puia Road, about 4 km from Kāwhia village. You walk over the dunes, and the springs are exposed about 2 hours either side of low tide. Bring a spade, check the tide times (and heights, because neap tides may not expose the zone), and wear shoes, because the dune sand gets hot. If low tide falls in the late afternoon, Tourism New Zealand notes you can soak while the sun goes down.
Kāwhia Kai Festival: a celebration of Māori food held on the weekend closest to Waitangi Day (6 February). It returned in February 2026 after a five-year break. The 2027 date wasn’t announced when we checked.
Safety checklist for both days
- A torch with a red mode for the night walks and Piripiri Cave
- Grippy shoes: every DOC track here has stairs and can be muddy
- Stay on the tracks, because tomos (sinkholes) and drop-offs are real
- A full tank and a road check before Te Anga Road
- Arrive 30 minutes early for every Discover Waitomo tour; late arrivals can forfeit their tickets
- Supervise children closely near streams and cave entrances
