Waitomo Caves at Christmas and New Year 2026–27: Opening Days and Booking
What's open at Waitomo each day from December 24, 2026 to January 5, 2027, which caves close on Christmas Day, holiday prices, and how far ahead to book.
The fortnight from Christmas to the first week of January is Waitomo’s busiest stretch of the year, when New Zealand families on their summer break join international visitors on the Auckland–Rotorua run. The caves run through almost all of it, but Christmas Day is different. Ruakuri Cave, the Legendary Black Water Rafting Co., Spellbound, Hobbiton and the Ōtorohanga Kiwi House all close on December 25. Discover Waitomo lists Ruakuri, but not the Glowworm Cave, among its Christmas Day closures, and it publishes no Christmas Day timetable for the Glowworm Cave, so check that December 25 can be selected in the booking calendar, or call 0800 456 922, before you plan around it.
From December 26 to January 4 everything is open and busy. Book the Glowworm Cave 2–4 weeks ahead, and the small-group trips (Spellbound, Okohua and black water rafting) 4–6 weeks ahead. The dates below cover the 2026–27 holidays and were checked against the operators’ own pages in October 2026. The calendar is for the Ruakuri Cave walking tour, which closes on Christmas Day but runs on every other day of the break.
Quick answers for the 2026–27 holidays
- Is the Glowworm Cave open on Christmas Day 2026? Discover Waitomo doesn’t list it as closed, and it doesn’t publish a Christmas Day timetable either. Check that December 25 can be selected in the booking calendar before you count on it.
- Is it open on New Year’s Day (Friday, January 1, 2027)? Yes. The operators publish Christmas Day closures only, so the caves, rafting, Spellbound, the Kiwi House and Hobbiton all run on January 1.
- Which days are busiest? December 26 to January 4, then weekends until schools go back between January 28 and February 3, 2027.
- What are the hours? The Glowworm Cave runs tours every 30 minutes from 9am to 5pm. Ruakuri runs fixed departures from 10am, with the last at 3:30pm.
- What does it cost? The Glowworm Cave is NZD 85 (about $48) per adult under the 2026–27 rates. Under-4s go free but still need a booking.
- Can I cancel? Direct bookings are free to cancel by phone at least 24 hours ahead. Late arrivals lose their tickets.
- What if it rains? Heavy rain rarely affects the Glowworm Cave. River trips such as Spellbound and black water rafting can be cancelled when water levels are high.
If the holiday dates for the caves fill up, the wider Waikato and King Country still has plenty to book: Hobbiton and Waitomo day trips from Auckland, small-group glowworm tours at Spellbound and Okohua, black water rafting through Ruakuri Cave, and day trips that pair the caves with Rotorua’s geothermal parks.
Is Waitomo open on Christmas Day 2026?
Partly. Most of Waitomo closes on December 25, and the Glowworm Cave is the one to check.
- Waitomo Glowworm Cave: check the booking calendar. The operator’s newzealand.com listing names only Aranui as closed on Christmas Day and describes the business as open “7 days” in “all months of the year”. Discover Waitomo gives the cave as “Open daily 9:00am – 5:00pm” with no Christmas exception, and its terms and conditions list Ruakuri, not the Glowworm Cave, as closed on December 25. None of these pages says outright that the cave runs on Christmas Day, so confirm before you drive down.
- Ruakuri Cave: closed. Discover Waitomo’s terms say “Ruakuri Cave and Hobbiton Movie set are closed on the 25th of December each year”.
- Aranui Cave: closed. The cave is also shut for maintenance: its planned reopening was September 14, 2026, and it was still listed as closed on October 6.
- Black Labyrinth and Black Abyss: closed. The Legendary Black Water Rafting Co. is “Open 364 days a year (closed on Christmas Day)”.
- Glowworm Caves Café & Restaurant: closed (“8am to 4pm (closed Christmas day)”).
- Spellbound: closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
- Hobbiton Movie Set: closed. Christmas Day is its only closure all year.
- Ōtorohanga Kiwi House: closed. It opens “364 days a year, except on Christmas Day”.
- Waitomo i-SITE: closed.
If Christmas Day is your only Waitomo day, book the Glowworm Cave online. If December 25 can’t be selected, take it as closed and don’t drive down on spec. Bring a picnic, because the on-site café is shut, and check again a few days before you travel.
What’s open each day, December 24, 2026 to January 5, 2027?
Aranui Cave is left out of this table: it was closed for maintenance when last checked on October 6, 2026, and its contact page lists only two tours a day, at 11:30am and 1pm from Friday to Sunday, once it reopens. Okohua hasn’t published its holiday days, so check those directly.

Later holiday dates:
- Auckland Anniversary Day is Monday, February 1, 2027, not January 26. It also covers Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Northland, so expect a busy long weekend from January 30 to February 1. Wellington Anniversary is Monday, January 25, 2027.
- Waitangi Day is Saturday, February 6, 2027, observed on Monday, February 8, which makes another long weekend. None of the operators above lists a closure on these dates.
Other services:
- Waitomo i-SITE: closed on December 25. Its newzealand.com listing gives Monday to Thursday 9am–11am and Friday to Sunday 9am–3pm, “includes public holidays”.
- Waitomo Caves Museum: daily, 10am–3:30pm.
- Glowworm Caves Café: 8am–4pm, closed on December 25.
- Huhu Café: listed by the holiday park as open Wednesday to Sunday, with public holiday hours that vary.
- Waitomo Top 10 Holiday Park: open through the break, and it promotes Christmas stays.
What are the Waitomo holiday opening hours and tour times?
The Glowworm Cave runs tours every 30 minutes from 9am to 5pm, the same hours all year. Ruakuri runs fixed departures from 10am, with the last tour at 3:30pm.
| Experience | Hours and departures over the holidays | Duration | Check-in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waitomo Glowworm Cave | Every 30 minutes, 9am–5pm | 45 min | 30 min before, Visitor Centre, 39 Waitomo Village Rd |
| Ruakuri Cave | Fixed departures from 10am; last tour 3:30pm | 1.5 hrs (allow 2) | 30 min before, Ruakuri Visitor Centre, Tumutumu Rd |
| Aranui Cave | 11:30am and 1pm, Friday to Sunday, once it reopens | 1 hr | 30 min before, at the main Visitor Centre, then drive yourself |
| Black Labyrinth | Contact page lists 9:30am and 1pm; base open 8am–4:30pm | 3 hrs | 30 min before, 585 Waitomo Caves Rd |
| Black Abyss | Limited departures; check the calendar | 5 hrs | As above |
| Spellbound | Up to six tours a day | Essential about 1.5 hrs; Explorer about 2.5 hrs | 15 min before, 334 Boddies Rd |

| Hobbiton Movie Set | 9am–5:30pm, closed only on December 25 | 2.5 hrs | 20 min before |
The Legendary Black Water Rafting Co. adds departures in summer, so the live calendar may show more than the two times on its contact page.
Which slots to pick: go for the first tours of the day (9am–10am) or the last ones in the afternoon. US News notes that car parking at the Glowworm Cave becomes “limited as the day progresses”, and coach groups are scheduled into mid-morning (10:40–11:30am), midday (12:50–1:30pm) and mid-afternoon (3–3:40pm) windows. At Spellbound, the operator says “morning trips tend to fill first”.
The Glowworm Cave ticket on its own isn’t sold on GetYourGuide. Viator sells it as the Waitomo Glowworm Caves Guided Tour, from about $49 with 4.4/5 from more than 1,250 reviews, and the first slots of the day go quickly over the holidays.
How far ahead should I book Waitomo for Christmas and New Year?
Book the Glowworm Cave 2–4 weeks ahead, and allow 4–6 weeks for anything with 12 or fewer places per departure. If your dates are fixed, book as soon as you know them: changing a direct booking is free up to 24 hours before.
| Product | Group size | Lead time for December 26 – January 4 | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waitomo Glowworm Cave | Up to 23 per boat, every 30 min | 2–4 weeks; 4+ weeks for December 31 – January 2, or for families who need a set time | A traveller on the TripAdvisor New Zealand Forum found combos on sale for December 31 and January 1 “but not glowworm by itself” |
| Most Popular Combo (Glowworm + Ruakuri) | Ruakuri runs fixed times | 3–4 weeks | Discover Waitomo says booking ahead is essential |
| Black Labyrinth | Up to 12, few departures a day | 4–6 weeks | Few departures, and a 45 kg minimum weight |
| Black Abyss | 4 to 8 people | 4–6+ weeks | Limited departures |
| Spellbound | Up to 12, up to six tours a day | 3–6 weeks | “Tours fill quickly during holiday periods” |
| Okohua | Up to 6 | 4–6 weeks | Very small groups |
| Hobbiton (same-day combo) | Large | 4–8 weeks | Forum users call Christmas and New Year at Hobbiton “very busy” |
| Accommodation in Waitomo village | Very limited | 3–6 months | Small village; New Year books out first |
Discover Waitomo puts it plainly: “If you’re planning on visiting us during our busy summer season (December – March) and school holidays it’s a big yes to booking in advance.”
With only a few days’ notice, check the combos first. On that TripAdvisor thread, from about two years ago, combo tickets were still on sale for December 31 and January 1 when the Glowworm-only ticket was gone, and the top reply was “simplest solution is to buy a Combo ticket”. The combos are sold only on waitomo.com. The operator’s FAQ also says that if you’re driving through, “we will do our best to secure your spot on a tour”. For the two caves in one booking from Auckland, the From Auckland: Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves Day Trip with Lunch (4.9/5 from more than 3,000 reviews, from $202) adds Hobbiton and the drive, and books out early over the break.
When are the New Zealand school and public holidays over summer 2026–27?
Schools break up no later than Saturday, December 19, 2026, and Term 1 starts between Thursday, January 28 and Wednesday, February 3, 2027, depending on the school (Ministry of Education framework).
| Date | Holiday |
|---|---|
| Fri Dec 18, 2026 | Latest last day of Term 4 |
| Fri Dec 25, 2026 | Christmas Day |
| Sat Dec 26, 2026 | Boxing Day (observed Mon Dec 28) |
| Fri Jan 1, 2027 | New Year’s Day |
| Sat Jan 2, 2027 | Day after New Year’s Day (observed Mon Jan 4) |
| Mon Jan 25, 2027 | Wellington Anniversary |
| Mon Feb 1, 2027 | Auckland Anniversary (Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Northland, Gisborne) |
| Sat Feb 6, 2027 | Waitangi Day (observed Mon Feb 8) |
How the crowds build:
- Domestic visitors start arriving the week before Christmas.
- Numbers peak from Boxing Day to the first weekend of January.
- Weekdays stay busy until mid-January, then thin once schools return in late January and early February.
- The two February long weekends (January 30 – February 1 and February 6–8) bring short spikes.
Public holiday surcharges: on the public holidays (December 25, 26 and 28; January 1, 2 and 4), many cafés and restaurants add a surcharge. The Restaurant Association of New Zealand says “in general, businesses can apply a 15 per cent surcharge on a public holiday”, and Commerce Commission chair Anna Rawlings says any surcharge “must be clearly disclosed, for example, by adding information to their website or placing a sign outside”. Cave ticket prices stay the same on public holidays.
How much does Waitomo cost in 2026–27?
The 2026–27 prices apply from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027. All prices are in NZD and include 15% GST. Discover Waitomo adds a 2% card fee.

- A family pass covers two adults and two children, and extra children can be added at a reduced rate.
Discover Waitomo’s 2026–27 child and family prices for the caves weren’t shown on its English pages when we checked, so read them off the booking calendar. Every price, combo and family rule is set out in our Waitomo Caves cost guide.
What are the cancellation, late-arrival and refund rules?
Book direct and you can cancel for free by phone up to 24 hours before. Arrive late and the ticket is forfeited.
Discover Waitomo’s direct terms:
- Check-in: at least 30 minutes before departure. You may be asked for photo ID and the card you paid with.
- Late arrival or missed tour: “your ticket(s) are forfeited and non-refundable.”
- Changes: allowed up to 24 hours before, subject to availability, by calling 0800 456 922.
- Cancellation: by phone, 9am–4pm, at least 24 hours before. Inside 24 hours, nothing is refunded. For combos, the 24 hours count from the first tour.
- Bookings made with a voucher: not refundable.
- If the operator cancels (weather, safety): a 100% refund.
Other operators and platforms:
- Okohua: its i-SITE booking page asks for 48 hours’ notice for a full refund on direct bookings.
- Spellbound: cancels “at any time which the river becomes unsafe or we forecast that it is likely to flood”.
- GetYourGuide: the Waitomo listings above, including Okohua, Ruakuri and the Black Labyrinth, offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before, with a reserve-now, pay-later option. A platform refund doesn’t change the operator’s late-arrival rule.
Book through a platform with free cancellation if your plans might still move. Book direct if you want to phone the operator to change times on the day. Our tickets and booking guide covers both routes in detail, and our guide to what happens when it rains covers weather cancellations and refunds.
How bad is holiday traffic, and how long is the drive?
Waitomo is listed at about 2 hours or a little more from Auckland, 1 hour from Hamilton and 2 hours from Rotorua. Over the holidays, add 30–60 minutes on the worst days, and plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before check-in.
Traffic patterns from recent years:
- Southbound out of Auckland (SH1 Manukau–Bombay): heaviest in the days just before Christmas. In 2025 the worst days were Monday, December 22 and Tuesday, December 23, from after 9am until after 4pm, according to NZTA’s forecasts as reported by 1News.
- Hamilton: NZTA, quoted by Stuff in December 2021, said “in previous years, holiday congestion in Hamilton has been at its peak on 26 and 27 December with 150,000 vehicles leaving the city between Christmas and New Year’s Day.”
- SH1 Karāpiro–Tīrau (the Rotorua side): busy southbound from December 23 to 26, and northbound in the first few days of the new year.
Planning the drive:
- Use NZTA’s Holiday Journeys planner, and its live journey planner on the day you travel.
- Leave Auckland before 8am, or drive on Christmas Day itself.
- The usual route from Auckland is the Waikato Expressway (SH1), then SH39 or SH3, then Waitomo Caves Road (SH37).
- The Glowworm Cave is about 8 km along Waitomo Caves Road from SH3.
Fuel and EV charging: fill up or charge in Ōtorohanga or Te Kūiti, because the village has very few services. Routes, buses and parking are in our guide to getting to Waitomo.
What’s the weather like at Waitomo in late December and January?
Outside it’s warm and often humid, with a real chance of heavy summer showers. The caves stay cool all year.
- Inside the caves:
- Discover Waitomo’s FAQ gives 16 °C year-round for the Glowworm Cave; its Top 10 Tips page says “12–14 degrees”.
- Ruakuri is “around 15 °C” and damp, with dripping water.
- Bring a light jacket and comfortable shoes with grip. The Glowworm Cave has two levels with around 100 stairs between them.
- Rain and flooding: heavy rain can stop river trips (Spellbound, black water rafting), while the main Glowworm Cave usually keeps running. One TripAdvisor reviewer who visited in a “very wet early December” found “some of the other activities were closed due to height of the river, but the main caves were still open.”
- For rafting: bring togs (swimwear) and a towel. Wetsuits are supplied.
Our best time to visit guide has the month-by-month weather, and what to expect on a Waitomo caves tour covers what to wear underground.
Where should I stay over New Year, and how early should I book?
Book Waitomo village accommodation 3–6 months ahead for December 26 to January 3. If it’s full, stay in Ōtorohanga (about 15 minutes away), Te Kūiti, or Hamilton (about 1 hour away).
- Waitomo village: Waitomo Top 10 Holiday Park (open over Christmas and New Year), Waitomo Homestead Cabins (sold with cave or rafting combos), plus B&Bs and lodges. There aren’t many beds, and the cheaper rooms go first.
- Ōtorohanga: near the Kiwi House, with fuel and supermarkets.
- Te Kūiti: handy for Spellbound and Okohua on Boddies Road.
- Hamilton: the most rooms and the most New Year’s Eve options.
- Raglan: about 1.5 hours away; the beach and surf choice, with a lively New Year’s Eve. Book very early.
What if Waitomo is sold out? Plan B options
- Try a combo. Combos often have space when the Glowworm-only ticket doesn’t.
- Then try Spellbound or Okohua, though both close or run short of space at peak times.
- Then go for the free glowworms on the Ruakuri Bush Walk after dark.
| Option | Best for | Holiday notes |
|---|---|---|
| Most Popular or Twin Cave combo on waitomo.com | Getting into the main cave when stand-alone tickets are gone | Costs more and takes longer; the Twin Cave combo needs Aranui open |
| Spellbound (Explorer NZD 99, Essential NZD 79), or the Spellbound Explorer day trip from Auckland (4.8/5, 162 reviews, from $174) | Photographers; small groups of up to 12 | Closed December 25 and 26; may cancel for floods |
| Okohua: The Waitomo Experience: Okohua Glowworm Cave Tour (4.97/5, 158 reviews, from $151) | Active travellers aged 12+, groups of up to 6 | Physically demanding; holiday days not published |
| Ruakuri Bush Walk (free) | Free glowworms at night on a 45-minute loop | Bring a torch with a red filter, then switch it off and let your eyes adjust |
| Mangapohue Natural Bridge (free) | A 17 m limestone arch | Open 24 hours |
| Marokopa Falls (free) | A big waterfall | About a 35-minute drive west |
| Piripiri Caves (free) | A short self-guided cave on the Marokopa road | Bring a torch |
| Ōtorohanga Kiwi House | Kiwi in nocturnal houses | Tickets valid for two consecutive days |
Our guide to alternative glowworm cave tours compares Spellbound and Okohua in full, and Glowworm Cave vs Ruakuri helps if you can only fit in one cave. Our breakdown of the Okohua tour covers what that trip involves.
What’s on at New Year’s Eve near Waitomo?
Waitomo village itself is quiet on New Year’s Eve. Raglan and Hamilton are the nearest places with organised celebrations, and their events are usually announced in November and December.
- Local bars such as the Tomo Bar & Eatery (normally 5pm–10pm) set their own holiday hours.
- For New Year’s Day, book a 9am or 10am glowworm tour: the first slots of the morning are usually easier to get than the mid-morning ones.
Are there Christmas events, specials or gift vouchers?
- Gift vouchers: Discover Waitomo sells vouchers, which make an easy Christmas present.
- Since March 17, 2026, vouchers are valid for three years from issue.
- You redeem them by phone (0800 456 922) at least 24 hours ahead, subject to availability.
- Bookings made with a voucher can’t be refunded.
- Christmas carols in the cave: a TripAdvisor review from December 2012 describes a carol event inside the Glowworm Cave with a local choir. We found no listing for 2026, so treat it as something that happened once.
- Deals: Discover Waitomo has run “kids free” promotions (for example, kids free at Aranui until August 31, 2026), but none is published for the holiday period.
Common traveller questions over the holidays
- “Glowworm-only tickets are sold out for December 31 and January 1.” This comes from that TripAdvisor New Zealand Forum thread, where combos were still on sale. Try a combo, Spellbound or Okohua.
- “Can we do Hobbiton and Waitomo in one day from Auckland?” You can, but it’s rushed, and forum users warn that Hobbiton at Christmas and New Year is “very busy”. Stay a night in Matamata or Waitomo instead, or let someone else drive: our Hobbiton and Waitomo combo guide compares the day trips.
- “We’re running late. Can we take the next tour?” The operator says it will try, but “during peak season this is not always possible”. A change fee applies if you didn’t call ahead.
- “Can I take photos?” Not in the Glowworm Cave. Photos are allowed in Ruakuri, Aranui and Spellbound.
- “Is it OK for toddlers and prams?” Ruakuri suits wheelchairs and prams. The Glowworm Cave doesn’t. More in our guide to Waitomo with kids.
