How Much Does It Cost to Visit Waitomo Caves?

If you can get to Waitomo yourself, the cave ticket is the whole bill. Most of what the dearer options add is time underground, or the drive from Auckland with lunch and Hobbiton included.

The Glowworm Cave costs NZD 85 booked with the operator, and GetYourGuide no longer lists the ticket on its own: when we checked on 13 October 2026 its cheapest listing that includes the cave was a $157 day trip from Auckland. Ruakuri Cave, the black water rafting trips and the small caving companies cost more because the trips are longer, from 90 minutes on foot in Ruakuri to five hours on the Black Abyss, which is booked with the operator. The day trips from Auckland, Hamilton and Rotorua build the cave into a full day with transport, and that is where most of the money goes.

The cave most people start with

At NZD 85 (about $48) booked direct, the Glowworm Cave costs the same as Aranui and less than Ruakuri, and it is the only one of the three with the boat ride under the glowworm grotto. The tour lasts 45 minutes, and the souvenir photos are sold separately. GetYourGuide withdrew its stand-alone listing for the cave in October 2026, so the calendar above is for the $157 Auckland day trip that includes it. Ruakuri has about 1,400 reviews on GetYourGuide and Aranui 24.

If 45 minutes feels short for the drive, Ruakuri adds a 90-minute walking tour through a longer cave. On its own it is $65 on GetYourGuide; as part of the Most Popular combo on the operator’s site, the two caves together cost NZD 179 (about $100).

What does each Waitomo cave ticket cost?

An adult ticket costs NZD 85 to NZD 122, or $48 to $65 on GetYourGuide for Aranui and Ruakuri. The three show caves are run by the same operator, and each has an adult, a child and a family price.

Prices checked September 2026; the operator's prices and the GetYourGuide prices for Ruakuri and Aranui were rechecked on 6 October 2026, and on 13 October 2026 the stand-alone Glowworm Cave listing and the two Legendary trips were found withdrawn. Operators change their prices through the year, so these figures are a guide; check the booking page for the current price. Dollar conversions use NZD 1 = $0.5598 (6 October 2026) and are approximate. Every tour named on this page links to its booking page, with its rating and number of reviews beside it. A tour with only a few reviews isn't necessarily a poor one, but few travellers have tested it yet.

The operator raised its prices at the start of October 2026. At today’s exchange rate Ruakuri now works out a few dollars cheaper on GetYourGuide: $65 there against about $68 direct. Aranui costs about the same on both sites, and GetYourGuide no longer sells the Glowworm Cave ticket on its own.

The bigger saving is on the combos, which only the operator sells:

Bought as two separate tickets direct, the Glowworm Cave and Ruakuri cost NZD 207; the Most Popular combo is NZD 179, a saving of NZD 28 (about $16) per adult. The operator’s Aranui page still said the cave was closed for maintenance on 6 October 2026, three weeks after its planned 14 September reopening, so check it is running before you book it or the Twin Cave combo. What do black water rafting and adventure caving cost?

Between $111 and $186 a person. The two Legendary trips are no longer listed on GetYourGuide, so their prices here are the operator’s. The price rises with the time you spend underground, the size of the group and how much climbing the trip involves.

The two Legendary trips cost NZD 199 (about $111) and NZD 332 (about $186) on the operator’s site. GetYourGuide listed them at about the same until it withdrew both in October 2026.

The Black Labyrinth has the longest review record of the four by a wide margin, on a listing GetYourGuide has since withdrawn. The Down to Earth cave tour costs $123 and keeps the group to eight, with caving clothes and boots provided. At Okohua you are one of six at most and the photos are included; the Black Labyrinth listing didn’t include them. The Black Abyss is the only one with an abseil, and it takes most of a day. What does a day trip to Waitomo cost?

From Auckland, a shared day trip costs $157 for the Glowworm Cave on its own and $202 with Hobbiton and lunch added. Days that add Rotorua or a buffet lunch at Hobbiton cost $230 to about $300. Paying more on these days doesn’t get you a different Glowworm Cave. It changes who you share the van with, where you eat and what else fits into the day.

Around $155 to $190: Waitomo on its own. A seven-hour day with pickup in central Auckland and the 45-minute Glowworm Cave tour on the $157 Auckland & Beyond day trip. Lunch is available to buy but isn’t included. For $17 more, the Spellbound day in the picks above spends three hours in the caves instead.

Around $200 to $265: Hobbiton and Waitomo in one day. Both entries are included on all of them. On the $202 Hobbiton and Waitomo day with lunch the two tickets alone would come to $118, so about $84 of the price covers the transport, the guide and lunch. Most of these days run 11 to 13 hours.

Around $290 to $300: a buffet lunch at Hobbiton. The dearest shared days serve lunch in the marquee at the movie set. FlexiTours’ Hobbiton and Waitomo day ($292) can also start in Rotorua.

If you’re moving on rather than going back, the one-way small-group day from Auckland to Rotorua ($174) stops at the Glowworm Cave on the way and takes one large and one small bag each.

Most of these visit the same Glowworm Cave. Several share an operator and list the same inclusions almost word for word, and the price differences come down to lunch, group size and what else is added to the day. These visit the same two places as the $202 Hobbiton and Waitomo day with lunch, and cost more.

• The Auckland & Beyond Hobbiton and Waitomo day is $51 more and doesn’t include lunch. It is rated 4.8 from 197 reviews, against 4.9 from nearly 3,000.
• The GreatSights coach tour is $62 more for a coach rather than a small group, with a picnic lunch. It is rated 4.7 from 888 reviews.
• The Sunny Tour day with Blue Spring is $294 more and adds a stop at the Blue Spring, with lunch extra. It has 15 reviews.

Among the Waitomo-only days, Sunny Tour’s small-group day costs $119 more than the $157 day trip for the same cave and has no reviews yet.

What does a private tour from Auckland cost?

The cheapest private days cost from $169 a person, but those leave the entry tickets out. Private listings show a per-person price that is usually based on a particular group size, so check what your group would pay when you choose the number of travellers. Every private tour here has only a handful of reviews.

What isn’t included in the price?

Photos. The Glowworm Cave’s souvenir photos are sold separately, and so are the guides’ photos on the Black Labyrinth. Okohua includes photos and video.

Lunch, on some day trips. The cheapest Hobbiton and Waitomo day includes a cafe-style lunch. Several dearer ones don’t, including the $242 small-group day and the $253 full-day trip, and none of the Waitomo-only days from Auckland list it.

Entry tickets, on the cheapest private tours. Besides the Shaheen Travels Hobbiton and Waitomo day above, Shaheen Travel’s private Waitomo, gardens and Kiwi House day (from $169, 5.0 from 1 review), its private Hobbiton and Waitomo day (from $187, 5.0 from 1 review) and Cab On Wheels’ private Hobbiton, Waitomo and Blue Spring day (from $253, 5.0 from 1 review) all leave the entry tickets for you to pay.

Should you pay more?

If you have a car, not much: the Glowworm Cave ticket is the core of a Waitomo visit, and the Most Popular combo, booked direct, is the cheapest way to add Ruakuri. Paying more makes sense if you want to be in the water rather than looking at it from a boat, or if you’re in Auckland without a car and the day trip replaces a rental. A private tour is easiest to justify for a group of four or more sharing the cost.
