Two things to know before anything else.

Aranui Cave is closed for maintenance, with a planned reopening of 14 September 2026. If your plan involves a three-cave day, it currently doesn’t work.

And no operator at Waitomo publishes a guaranteed year-round timetable. Times shift with the season, extra departures appear in summer, and the reseller listings that show precise clock times routinely lag behind the operator’s actual schedule. What follows is the reliable pattern — then check the live booking calendar for your date. The calendar below shows real departures for the Glowworm Cave and is the most current source on this page.

The daily picture

Everything is open every day of the year except Christmas Day.

The Glowworm Cave

The most flexible of the lot. Open daily from around 9am to 5pm with tours departing every half hour, extending to about 5:30pm from Labour Weekend through to Easter Monday.

The tour itself is 45 minutes. With the mandatory check-in, allow around 90 minutes on site.

Because departures roll rather than run to fixed slots, this is the cave to book around everything else. Detail in the boat ride guide.

Ruakuri

Fixed departure times, roughly 10am to 3:30pm, with extra tours added over summer.

You’ll find reseller listings publishing a specific seven-slot timetable starting at 9am. The operator’s own pages say departures run from 10am. Those conflict, which is exactly why we’re not printing a list — check the live calendar.

Allow two hours: about 90 minutes underground plus check-in. It’s the longest of the walking tours and the only accessible one. See the Ruakuri guide.

Aranui — currently closed

Closed for maintenance with a reopening planned for 14 September 2026. Verify before building a day around it, and note the operator’s site carries a generic “all tours operating normally” banner that does not override the closure notice on the Aranui page itself.

When running, Aranui works on fixed departures, takes about an hour plus a short bush walk, and has an unusual arrangement: you check in at the Glowworm Caves Visitor Centre, then self-drive about five minutes to the Ruakuri Scenic Reserve to meet your guide.

Black water rafting

Both trips leave from the Legendary Black Water Rafting base at 585 Waitomo Caves Road, with the same 30-minute check-in.

Black Labyrinth runs a handful of fixed departures daily, more in summer. Black Abyss, at five hours, has fewer — typically a morning and a midday start.

Exact times are released through the booking system rather than published as a list. Both sell out in peak season because group sizes are small. See black water rafting at Waitomo.

Seasonal changes

The pattern is consistent across everything: longer hours and more departures in summer, fewer in winter.

The one published changeover is the Glowworm Cave’s extended closing time, which runs from Labour Weekend in late October through to Easter Monday. Beyond that, the operator simply notes “additional tours in summer” for Ruakuri and both rafting trips without publishing dates.

Practically: in December through February expect more choice and book further ahead. In winter expect fewer slots and book closer to the day. Which time of year to visit is covered separately in the best time to visit Waitomo.

Closures and public holidays

Christmas Day is the only confirmed full closure. The operator’s terms state the experiences run every other day of the year.

One to check yourself: ANZAC Day. Many New Zealand attractions restrict trading before 1pm on 25 April. The operator publishes no statement either way for the caves, so if you’re planning an ANZAC Day morning visit, ring ahead rather than assume.

Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Waitangi Day, Good Friday and Easter Monday all appear to operate normally, but confirm anything that matters to your plans.

The 30-minute check-in

Every Discover Waitomo tour requires check-in 30 minutes before departure. This isn’t a suggestion and it isn’t padding — groups are assembled and walked to the cave on a schedule.

If you’re late and haven’t called ahead, expect a fee to move your tour, and in peak season there may be nothing to move you to. Tickets bought through resellers are typically forfeited outright.

The combo trap

This catches people constantly, so it’s worth being explicit.

Different caves check in at different places. The Glowworm Cave and Aranui check in at the main Visitor Centre on Waitomo Village Road. Ruakuri checks in at its own visitor centre on Tumutumu Road, about five minutes’ drive away.

So a two-cave combo needs: first tour, plus the drive, plus a second 30-minute check-in. Build that in or you’ll miss the second slot. Full booking mechanics in tickets and booking.

Other Experiences You Might Enjoy

Once your cave slot is locked, the rest of the day is easy to fill. Black water rafting runs from the same valley, the Ōtorohanga Kiwi House is 15 minutes up the road, and the Hobbiton Movie Set near Matamata or a day tour from Auckland turns the caves into a full Waikato itinerary. Sample days

Half day, one cave. Check in 8:30am for a 9am Glowworm Cave tour. Done by 9:45am. Coffee in the village, on the road by 10:30am. This is the Auckland day-tripper’s efficient version.

Full day, two caves. Morning Glowworm Cave, lunch at Huhu Café or the visitor centre, afternoon Ruakuri. The best-value use of a day at Waitomo.

Rafting plus a cave. Morning Black Labyrinth (three hours including the shower and soup), afternoon Glowworm Cave. Long but very doable.

Black Abyss day. The five-hour tour eats the middle of the day. From Auckland, that’s roughly a ten-hour door-to-door commitment with the drive. Don’t add anything else.

Waitomo plus Hobbiton. Hobbiton’s standard tour is 2.5 hours and Matamata is about 90 minutes away, so pair a morning cave tour with an afternoon Hobbiton slot or the reverse. Detail in the Hobbiton combo guide.

Which slot to actually book

The first tours of the morning and the last of the afternoon are the quietest. Weekdays beat weekends.

Avoid the midday window. Auckland coach day-trips typically arrive late morning and clear out early afternoon, which makes the middle of the day the busiest stretch at the Glowworm Cave. Book before about 11am or after about 3pm and you’ll be in a smaller, less rushed group.

Does the display vary by time of day?

Slightly, and less than you’d think inside a managed cave.

Long-term monitoring of the Waitomo colony published in 2024 found the glowworms follow a synchronised daily cycle, with the brightness peak drifting seasonally from around 5pm in early spring to about 8pm in summer.

But all the boat tours finish well before that peak, and the cave’s climate is actively managed. In practice the display is impressive at any tour time, and crowd levels will affect your experience far more than the diurnal cycle will.

Evening and after dark

No Discover Waitomo cave tour runs after dark. The last departures are mid-to-late afternoon.

CaveWorld’s Footwhistle runs a sunset tour timed so you exit after dark, which makes for a more intense display.

Spellbound runs up to six small-group tours a day (maximum 12 people) from a departure point about 15 km south of the village off Boddies Road, with a 20-minute arrival requirement. It operates year-round except Christmas and Boxing Day, with reduced winter days — sources differ on exactly how reduced, so check. It can also close for flooding.

The free option

Two after-dark glowworm walks cost nothing:

The Ruakuri Bush Walk — a loop of about 1.6 km taking 45 minutes to an hour.

Mangapohue Natural Bridge — about 20 minutes return.

Both light up properly once it’s fully dark, which in summer means late. Bring a torch, stay on the formed track, don’t shine light directly at the glowworms, and take real care near unfenced drops, streams and cave entrances.

This is the one place where the diurnal cycle is worth knowing about — later in the evening is genuinely better.

Other operators

Spellbound — up to six tours daily, pre-booking essential, reduced winter days.

CaveWorld / Footwhistle — small-group and private tours through the day, plus the sunset tour. Pre-booked.

Nikau Cave — 90-minute tours by booking only, with a café on site. About 90 minutes southwest of Auckland rather than at Waitomo proper.

Waitomo Adventures — the Lost World, Haggas Honking Holes, TumuTumu Toobing and St Benedict’s Caverns. Set times that vary considerably by season, with far fewer winter departures. Check-in 30 minutes before.

Kiwi Cave Rafting — by booking; confirm times directly.

All of these run smaller groups than the main caves, which means they fill earlier. Book ahead.

Cafés, shops and visiting without a tour

You can visit the visitor centres, café and gift shop without a tour booking.

Centre opening hours are generally wider than tour times, though published hours vary between the operator’s own pages — somewhere between 8am and 5pm depending on which page and season you look at.

Huhu Café in the village keeps its own hours, opening around midday and running late, with winter variation. It closes only on Christmas Day.

The Waitomo Homestead on SH3 runs roughly 8am to 4pm.

The Long Black Café operates at the rafting base for participants.

Nearby attraction hours, for planning

Ōtorohanga Kiwi House — daily 9am to 5pm with last admission at 4:15pm, closed Christmas Day. Worth timing around the keeper talks: kiwi at 10:30am, 1:30pm and 3:30pm, with kea and kākā at 11am, kākāriki at midday and longfin eels at 2:30pm. About 15 minutes from Waitomo and the easiest addition to a cave day.

The Waitomo Caves Discovery Centre — sources conflict badly on this one, with one listing daily hours and another listing Friday to Sunday only. Check before making it an itinerary anchor.

Hobbiton — the standard tour is 2.5 hours with several departures daily, open every day except Christmas Day, and about 90 minutes’ drive away.

How to check current times

Use the operator’s live booking calendar. For the three main caves and both rafting trips, that’s the Discover Waitomo booking system. For the independents, their own sites.

Reseller listings publish specific departure times that are often out of date — treat them as indicative only, and treat the live availability calendar at the top of this page as the current picture for the Glowworm Cave.

If a combo booking’s timings look confusing, the operator’s contact centre will confirm your linked tour times, which is a better use of five minutes than losing a non-refundable ticket.
