What to expect on the Waitomo Glowworm Cave tour

The Waitomo Glowworm Cave can only be visited on a guided tour, so the 45-minute boat tour is the same tour you would buy at the visitor centre, for NZD 85 (about $48 at current exchange rates) per adult on the operator’s own site. GetYourGuide withdrew its stand-alone listing for it in October 2026 and now sells the cave inside a seven-hour day trip from Auckland, from $157 with transport.

The caves were formed over 30 million years ago and have two levels. The upper level is dry, with formations known as the Catacombs, the Pipe Organ and the Banquet Chamber. The lower level holds the stream and the Cathedral, a tall chamber with good acoustics, and the stream runs on into the Glowworm Grotto, where the ceiling is covered in the larvae of Arachnocampa luminosa, a glowworm found only in New Zealand. You see the grotto from a boat, in the dark and in silence.

What you get from the walk depends a lot on the guide. Guides were rated 4.7/5 on the withdrawn listing, and recent five-star reviews name George, Danny and Cohen among others, several of them for singing a waiata in the Cathedral. A few lower-rated reviews describe a guide who was hard to hear or seemed keen to finish.

For this page, we checked recent traveller reports, paying particular attention to what people said about the length of the boat ride, the spacing between groups and the photo rules. There are four things worth knowing before you book:

• The boat ride is the shortest part of the tour. Most of the 45 minutes is a guided walk, and reviewers estimate the boat section at five to ten minutes.
• Reviewers describe groups setting off about every 10 minutes, so at busy times you may hear the next group and wait in the dark to board.
• Photography isn’t allowed inside the cave, and cameras and GoPros can’t be taken on the tour. Souvenir photos are sold separately afterwards.
• The glowworms look fainter to the eye than in the long-exposure photos used to advertise the cave.

Those reviews are a small minority. Fewer than one review in 25 gave the stand-alone listing one or two stars, and the lower-rated ones are mostly about the length and the crowds, not the glowworms. If you go in expecting a 45-minute cave walk that ends with a few quiet minutes on the water, the tour is likely to suit you.

Why the rating is lower on TripAdvisor

On GetYourGuide the stand-alone tour was rated 4.5 from more than 5,800 reviews before it was withdrawn. On TripAdvisor the Waitomo Glowworm Caves attraction page shows about 4.2 from more than 6,200 reviews, and it ranks sixth of eleven things to do in Waitomo Caves.

The two aren’t directly comparable. A booking-platform rating comes only from people who bought this tour on that platform and were asked to rate it afterwards. TripAdvisor collects reviews from anyone who visited, however they booked, over a longer period. The complaints are the same on both sites, though: the short boat ride, the crowds at peak times and the price for 45 minutes.

Ruakuri and the small-group caving companies rate higher, but they are different products. Ruakuri is a longer walk, and the small-group trips take eight people or fewer.

Tips for booking the Glowworm Cave tour

• Check in at the visitor centre 30 minutes before your tour time. The operator says that if you arrive late or miss your departure, your ticket is forfeited and you have to buy a new one, subject to availability.
• Book the first tour of the morning or a late-afternoon slot if you want a quieter cave. Large tour groups mostly arrive between about 10:30am and 2:30pm. One recent reviewer did feel the last tour of the day was hurried. Our best time to visit guide has more on timing.
• Leave your camera in the car and bring a contactless card. Cameras and GoPros can’t be taken on the tour, and the Glowworm Cave visitor centre is cashless, including the café and the gift shop.
• Bring a warm jacket and comfortable shoes. The paths have good handrails, but some areas of the cave can be wet and slippery.
• If there has been heavy rain, ask at check-in whether the boat is running its usual route. In high water the boat can turn back early, and a couple of recent reviewers only found out once they were at the cave.

How the 45 minutes run

You check in at the visitor centre on Waitomo Village Road. The operator’s site says the cave is open daily from 9am to 5pm, with tours departing multiple times a day all year. It doesn’t publish a winter timetable.

The withdrawn GetYourGuide listing gave two lengths. Its key details say “Duration 1 hour”, its list of inclusions says “45-minute guided tour”, and the operator says to allow 45 minutes. Several reviewers booked expecting an hour, and several describe the tour ending after 30 to 40 minutes. With the check-in, plan on about an hour and a quarter at the cave.

The tour is a guided walk through the upper level, down to the Cathedral, then a short wait at the jetty and the boat ride through the grotto. The boat comes out of the cave at a different point from where you went in. From there the path leads back to the café and the gift shop.

Stop 1: The upper level and the Cathedral

The walk takes up most of the tour. The guide explains how the limestone formed, points out the formations and tells the story of the cave, including its Māori history. The cave is lit along the paths, which are paved in places and have handrails throughout. A few reviewers found that it made the cave feel less natural than they had expected.

The Cathedral is where the walk usually slows down. Guides sometimes sing there, and recent reviews mention it as a highlight. In other reviews the guide asked the group to sing instead.

Stop 2: The boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto

The boat ride is what people come for, and it is the shortest part of the tour. This is one of the most common criticisms in the lower-rated reviews. The withdrawn listing called it a tour “by boat”, and some reviewers expected most of the 45 minutes to be on the water. In practice they describe five to ten minutes in the boat, and some say it turned slowly in the main chamber before heading to the exit.

The guide pulls the boat along ropes fixed to the cave walls in the dark and asks everyone to stay silent. Reviewers who had that silence describe the grotto as the best part of the day. Some had it broken by other passengers talking or by a crying baby, which is hard to avoid on a tour open to all ages.

Water level can shorten the ride further. After heavy rain, a few reviewers said the boat went only a short distance and returned the way it came. The operator says only heavy rain over an extended period affects the cave, so this isn’t common, but it is worth asking about after a wet week.

The display itself gets good reports, including from people who were unhappy with the rest of the tour. The glowworms do look fainter than in photographs, because those are long exposures and the eye sees something closer to a starry sky. Other Waitomo cave tours

If you want longer underground or a smaller group, Waitomo has several other options. Ruakuri Cave is a 90-minute walk with a spiral entrance and wheelchair access, and photography is allowed in selected areas. • Souvenir photos. A photographer takes pictures at the entrance, and they are sold separately afterwards. A few reviewers found the finished photos looked heavily edited.
• Accessibility. The Glowworm Cave has stairs and no wheelchair access. Ruakuri Cave is the wheelchair-accessible cave at Waitomo.

Is the Waitomo Glowworm Cave worth it?

Yes, if you haven’t seen glowworms before and you are already passing through Waitomo. At NZD 85 (about $48) it is one of the lower-cost cave tours at Waitomo, and the guides are well rated. Go in expecting a cave walk with a short boat ride at the end.

It makes less sense if the drive from Auckland is only for this tour. In that case, add a second cave or another stop so the day isn’t built around 45 minutes.

The Ruakuri Cave walking tour suits you better if you want more time with the glowworms and fewer people around you. It is rated 4.7 from more than 1,300 reviews, costs from $65 per person and lasts 90 minutes, and its lower-rated reviews rarely mention crowding. If you want a quiet, wild cave and don’t mind changing into caving gear, the Off the Beaten Track cave tour takes up to eight people for 3.5 hours, from $123, and is rated 5.0 from almost 300 reviews.
