The official combos: caves, and one kiwi

The Kiwi House is the region’s best wildlife stop — time it for a keeper talk (kiwi at 10:30am, 1:30pm and 3:30pm) — and its tickets are valid two consecutive days, which pairs well with an overnight.

These are tickets, not tours: no transport is included, and the caves have separate check-ins five minutes apart, so sequence the day carefully.

Waitomo Glowworms + Ruakuri + Blue Spring from Auckland — a full-day tour from around $292 USD combining the two best caves with the Te Waihou walkway.

Redwood Zipline + “mini glowworms” + Blue Springs — an Auckland adventure day from around $251 USD that pairs a Rotorua-side zipline with a small glowworm stop and the spring. Note the glowworm portion is not the famous Waitomo cave.

Caves to Kiwis eBike ride — the local outlier, from around $55 USD: an eBike ride from the Waitomo Caves to the Ōtorohanga Kiwi House alongside farmland and the Waipā River. As a car-free way to link the district’s two best stops, it’s a genuinely nice idea.

The caveat that applies to all of them: these listings currently carry one review or none. That doesn’t make them bad — new products start at zero — but it means you’re an early customer. Book the flexible-cancellation option, and judge the itinerary on its stops rather than its star rating.

Should you just build it yourself?

Usually, yes — if you have a car. Every stop in those combos is independently accessible and cheap or free:

• Blue Spring (Te Waihou Walkway) near Putāruru is free — 15 minutes’ walk each way from the Leslie Road car park, with the full 4.7 km walkway reopened after its 2025 upgrade. It sits naturally on the Rotorua-side route, which is why it’s an easy add heading south-east and an awkward one on an Auckland out-and-back — route detail in getting to Waitomo.
• Ōtorohanga Kiwi House is a 15-minute drive from the caves with parking at the door.
• Hamilton Gardens is free to enter (the themed enclosed gardens now charge non-residents) and roughly midway on the Auckland drive.
