Hobbiton Movie Set green hillside with hobbit holes, the perfect pairing with Waitomo Caves

The Hobbiton + Waitomo combination has become New Zealand’s most popular single-day itinerary. Two completely different but equally iconic experiences — a movie set fantasy world and an ancient underground cave system — that happen to be 45 minutes apart in the Waikato region. If you’re spending time in Auckland and want one day that delivers two world-class memories, this is it.

Why This Combo Works

Hobbiton Movie Set (Matamata, 170km south of Auckland) and Waitomo Caves (Waitomo Caves Village, 210km south of Auckland) sit on a logical arc south of Auckland. They’re in opposite directions from each other — Hobbiton is northeast of Waitomo — but they’re connected by a 45-minute road link (about 47km).

The combination makes logistical sense for anyone arriving in Auckland and wanting to see the Waikato region in a single day. Most guided combo tours from Auckland run the whole route as a circuit, returning to Auckland by early evening.

Option 1: Guided Combo Tour from Auckland

The easiest way to do both in a day is a guided coach tour that handles all logistics — pickup from Auckland, transport between sites, entry fees, and commentary.

Several operators run guided Hobbiton + Waitomo day tours from Auckland. The most popular itinerary:

  • 7:30–8:00am — Auckland pickup (various central Auckland hotels)
  • 10:30–11:00am — Arrive Hobbiton, 2-hour guided tour of the movie set
  • 12:30–1:00pm — Lunch (included on most tours, at the Green Dragon Inn at Hobbiton)
  • 2:30–3:00pm — Arrive Waitomo, 45-minute Glowworm Cave boat tour
  • 5:30–6:00pm — Return to Auckland

Pros: No driving. Guide handles everything. Ideal for international visitors unfamiliar with NZ roads or driving on the left.

Cons: Early departure, no flexibility on timing, you move at the group’s pace. The Waitomo portion is typically the standard 45-minute boat tour only (not the longer Ruakuri or adventure options).

Option 2: Self-Drive

If you’re comfortable driving in New Zealand (left-hand side, distances in km), self-driving gives you full control over timing and the option to add stops.

Recommended self-drive order: Hobbiton first (morning), then Waitomo (afternoon). This is the more natural geographic arc from Auckland — Hobbiton is closer and north of Waitomo. You arrive at Hobbiton when it’s fresh and photogenic in morning light (tours start from 9am). By the time you reach Waitomo for the early afternoon glowworm tour, you haven’t burned all your energy.

Driving times:

  • Auckland to Hobbiton (Matamata): ~2 hours
  • Hobbiton to Waitomo: ~45 minutes
  • Waitomo back to Auckland: ~2.5 hours

Total drive time (round trip): ~5.5 hours. Combined with 2-3 hours at Hobbiton and 1-2 hours at Waitomo, this makes for a full day (depart 7am, return 7–8pm).

Self-drive tip: Both Hobbiton and Waitomo require pre-booked time slots. Book in advance — particularly Hobbiton, which sells out weeks ahead in summer. You cannot just show up at Hobbiton and join a tour.

What to Book in Advance

Hobbiton Movie Set: Time slots sell out weeks to months in advance in summer (December–February). Book before you leave for New Zealand if possible. A standard 2-hour guided tour of the movie set is what most visitors do; the “Evening Banquet” tours are separate and more expensive. For a full breakdown of Hobbiton ticket types, tours from each city, and what to expect, see our dedicated Hobbiton Movie Set tours guide.

Waitomo Glowworm Caves: The main boat tour runs every 30 minutes and has more capacity than Hobbiton, but morning slots fill first. Book at least 1–2 weeks ahead to secure your preferred time in peak season.

Guided combo tours: Good combo tours from Auckland typically sell out 1–3 weeks ahead in peak season. Book as early as you can confirm your Auckland dates.

The Hobbiton to Waitomo Drive

The drive south from Hobbiton (Matamata) to Waitomo takes approximately 45 minutes on SH29 and SH3. It’s a pleasant drive through classic Waikato farmland — rolling green hills, sheep, dairy farms. There are no dramatic mountain passes or difficult roads.

Fuel up in Matamata before leaving Hobbiton. Waitomo Village has a small petrol station but limited services.

How Long Do You Need at Each Site?

Hobbiton: 2.5–3 hours minimum. The standard guided tour is 2 hours. Add 30 minutes for the Green Dragon Inn (a hobbit-themed pub serving ales and ciders at the end of the tour), and more if you want to linger at specific photo spots.

Waitomo (main glowworm cave only): 1.5 hours. The boat tour is 45 minutes; allow another 45 minutes for parking, check-in, and post-tour.

Waitomo (main cave + Ruakuri): 3.5–4 hours. If you want a full cave day, doing both the Waitomo Glowworm Cave boat tour and the 2-hour Ruakuri Cave walking tour is the premium version of the Waitomo experience. Only realistic as a self-drive or if you stay overnight in Waitomo.

Staying Overnight at Waitomo

If you’d rather not rush, consider staying one night in Waitomo Village or nearby. This removes all time pressure, lets you do the main cave in the afternoon and Ruakuri (or Black Water Rafting) the following morning, and the drive back to Auckland feels relaxed rather than a race.

Accommodation in Waitomo Village is limited — book early. Otorohanga (16km north) and Te Awamutu (45km north) have more options.

Is One Day Enough for Both?

For most visitors, yes — one day covers the highlights of both Hobbiton and Waitomo comfortably. The standard combo formula (2-hour Hobbiton tour + 45-minute Waitomo glowworm tour) delivers the signature experiences at each site without feeling rushed.

Where one day feels insufficient: if you want to do Black Water Rafting at Waitomo (half-day activity), explore Ruakuri in depth, or do multiple Hobbiton tours. For those scenarios, plan 2 days in the Waikato region.
