Waitomo in the NZ School Holidays: A Family Guide for January

Planning Waitomo in the NZ summer holidays? Which cave suits which age, family pass prices for 2026–27, toddler and pushchair rules, Christmas closures, rain plans and sample family itineraries.

Updated November 2026

Make the Waitomo Glowworm Cave your family’s anchor: 45 minutes, the boat ride, and under-4s go free. Book an early-morning slot as soon as your dates are fixed. Add the Ōtorohanga Kiwi House (family pass NZD 75), 15 minutes up the road. With a toddler in a pushchair, choose Ruakuri Cave, the only one of the three Discover Waitomo caves that takes pushchairs. If your kids are 12 or older and weigh at least 45 kg, Black Labyrinth black water rafting will be the highlight of their summer.

January in Waitomo falls inside the summer school break, which runs, according to Ministry of Education dates, from no later than Saturday 19 December 2026 until Term 1 2027 starts between Thursday 28 January and Wednesday 3 February 2027. That window takes in the Christmas and New Year rush and two long weekends at the end of the break. It’s also one of the best family days out in the North Island: the caves are cool, dark and quiet when it’s hot outside, and the glowworm boat ride works for everyone from grandparents to well-settled babies. The holidays have a few traps, though: tours that need pre-booking, a strict no-latecomers policy, pushchair limits, and age and weight minimums that catch out families with a keen 11-year-old.

This guide covers which tour suits which age, what a family day costs in 2026–27, the busiest dates, and what to do if it rains or tours sell out. Our year-round Waitomo with kids guide goes deeper on every age and weight limit; this page is the January version. Prices are in NZD including GST; Discover Waitomo’s prices and tour times apply from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027 and can change without notice.

Ruakuri is the cave that works for the widest age range, from a baby in a pushchair to a grandparent, and you can book it on its own. The calendar is for the Waitomo Caves: Ruakuri Cave 1.5-Hour Guided Tour on GetYourGuide (4.7/5 from 1,409 reviews, from $65).

Our picks for families

  • Our pick for families: the Waitomo Glowworm Cave. It’s short (45 minutes), has the famous boat ride, under-4s go free, and tours leave about every 30 minutes during opening hours. It’s sold direct on waitomo.com (NZD 85 adult, NZD 39 child, NZD 217 family) or on Viator as the Waitomo Glowworm Caves Guided Tour (4.4/5 from more than 1,250 reviews, from about $49).
  • Best for toddlers: Ruakuri Cave, for the pushchair access, or Waitomo Adventures’ Troll Cave, an “underground escape room” that takes children from age 1, booked direct on waitomo.co.nz.
  • Best for 6–11s: Spellbound Glowworm & Cave Explorer. Groups are capped at 12, the glowworm raft ride lasts about 20 minutes, photos are allowed, and a child pays NZD 38, about a third of the adult price, booked direct on glowworm.co.nz. From Auckland it’s on GetYourGuide as the Auckland: Spellbound, Waitomo Glowworm Caves Explorer Tour ($174, 4.8/5 from 166 reviews).
  • Best for teens: the Legendary Black Water Rafting Co. Black Labyrinth (12+, 45 kg+), with a family pass for 2 adults and 2 youths. It’s on GetYourGuide as the Waitomo Caves: Labyrinth Black Water Rafting Experience (4.9/5 from 1,859 reviews).
  • Budget pick: the free Ruakuri Walk at night (glowworms, torch needed), the Mangapohue Natural Bridge boardwalk, and the Waitomo Caves Museum (kids 4–14 free with a paying adult).
  • Best rainy-day family option: any underground tour, plus the Kiwi House, whose nocturnal houses are indoors. Your ticket is valid for two days.
  • Best family base: Waitomo TOP 10 Holiday Park. You can walk to the Glowworm Cave, and it has a pool, a free hot tub, a playground and a trampoline.

When are the NZ summer school holidays in 2026–27?

According to Ministry of Education dates, the summer break runs from no later than Saturday 19 December 2026 until Term 1 2027 starts, between Thursday 28 January and Wednesday 3 February 2027. State schools finish Term 4 no later than Friday 18 December 2026. The Ministry sets those windows and each school chooses its own day.

Key dates for Waitomo:

DateWhat it means for Waitomo
Sat 19 Dec 2026Summer holidays have started for all state schools
Thu 24 Dec 2026Last day before the Christmas closures (see the table below)
Fri 25 Dec 2026Christmas Day: several attractions closed
26 Dec 2026 to mid-January 2027Peak family travel; expect the most competition for tour slots
Mon 1 Feb 2027Auckland Anniversary Day: a long weekend for Auckland families, often a busy last fling before school
Sat 6 Feb 2027 (observed Mon 8 Feb)Waitangi Day: another long weekend, after most schools have gone back

Australian families: Australian summer holidays usually run from mid or late December to late January or early February, but the dates differ by state, so check your state’s education department. Your break overlaps almost completely with New Zealand’s, so plan for New Zealand peak conditions.

UK and US families: January is mid-winter school time for you, so you’ll mostly be here outside your own holidays but inside ours. Book as if it’s peak season, because it is.

How busy is Waitomo in January, and how far ahead should I book?

Book as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for Ruakuri, black water rafting and Spellbound. Small groups and fixed tour times mean these fill first.

What the operators say:

  • Discover Waitomo’s own terms warn that “Our tours can book out well in advance”, and its site banner says “We highly recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment.”
  • Glowworm Cave boats carry up to 23 people, and tours run about every 30 minutes during opening hours (9am–5pm daily). That’s the most capacity in Waitomo, so it’s your best last-minute option.
  • Ruakuri Cave has fixed tour times, and Discover Waitomo says it’s “essential to book ahead”. It also needs at least 2 guests to run.
  • Black Labyrinth takes up to 12 people per trip; Black Abyss takes 4–8.
  • Spellbound runs up to 6 tours a day, with 12 people at most per tour.

We couldn’t find official sell-out figures for any operator, so this advice rests on the published capacity limits above and the operators’ own warnings.

Best time of day with kids: take the first tour of the morning. Kids are fresher, parking is easier, and if something goes wrong (a meltdown, a late arrival) there are more later departures to fall back on. Avoid mid-afternoon slots for under-5s: that’s nap time, and the darkness and silence can tip a tired toddler over.

Late arrival rules (read this twice): Discover Waitomo asks you to check in 30 minutes before departure. If you’re late or miss your tour, your tickets are forfeited and non-refundable. Spellbound asks you to arrive 20 minutes early, and its minibus leaves on time from 334 Boddies Rd, Te Kūiti, about 15 km from Waitomo Village, not from the village itself. Add buffer time for toilet stops and holiday traffic.

What if it’s sold out?

  1. Check the booking platforms as well as the operator. GetYourGuide, Viator and Klook sometimes hold allocations.
  2. Switch caves. If the Glowworm Cave is full, try Ruakuri, or Spellbound (a separate operator with its own capacity).
  3. Call. Discover Waitomo: 0800 456 922 (bookings and changes by phone 9am–4pm). Spellbound: 0800 773 552. Both say they’ll fit in drop-ins and last-minute bookings when space allows.
  4. Fill the gap for free. Do the Ruakuri Walk after dark or the Mangapohue Natural Bridge, then try again the next morning.
  5. Stay the night. A two-day plan makes a sold-out afternoon much less painful. See our 2-day Waitomo itinerary.

Which Waitomo experience suits which age?

Under 4: the Glowworm Cave (free, carry them) or Ruakuri (pushchair). Ages 4–11: any walking cave, Spellbound and the Troll Cave. 12–15: add the Black Labyrinth. 16+: everything, including the Black Abyss.

If your baby won’t settle, the guide will advise you. Spellbound may ask you to leave early if crying continues.

Preschoolers (4–5)The Discover Waitomo caves (the child rate starts at 4); Spellbound (the operator says children from 4 enjoy it); Kiwi House free for under-5s—Ruakuri takes about 1.5 hours and over 1 km of walking, which is long for a 4-year-old.
Primary (6–11)Everything except black water rafting; Spellbound Explorer (2.5 hours); Troll Cave (designed around 8-year-olds, though older kids still enjoy it); the museumBlack water rafting: no exceptions are publishedThe Troll Cave is genuinely scary for some under-8s. The operator says it can “make it less scary” for small children.
Tweens and teens (12–15)Black Labyrinth (12+, 45 kg+); youth price up to age 15Black Abyss (16+)The 45 kg minimum catches small 12-year-olds. A 15-year-old pays the adult price at the Discover Waitomo caves (child = 4–14).
Older teens (16+)Black Abyss (16+, 45 kg+, 5 hours, including a 35 m abseil), on GetYourGuide as Black Abyss: The Legendary Black Water Tour (4.9/5 from 297 reviews)—Adult price for most things, but still “youth” at Hobbiton until 17.

Will the dark or the boat scare my child?

The Glowworm Cave boat ride is silent and engine-free, in near-total darkness. Most kids are spellbound, and a few panic. Discover Waitomo says no lifejackets are needed because of the nature of the boat ride. What helps:

  • Rehearse at home. Practise “glowworm voices” (whispers) and sitting in a dark room for a few minutes.
  • Explain what glowworms are. They’re fungus-gnat larvae, not worms, and a child who knows the “trick” is less frightened. Our guide to what glowworms are has the details.
  • Sit next to them on the boat with a hand on their back.
  • Claustrophobia: Ruakuri’s lowest ceiling point is about 130 cm, so adults duck briefly. Discover Waitomo notes that confined passages may cause anxiety for some visitors.

Is the Glowworm Cave suitable for babies?

Yes, with caveats. Infants are allowed and under-4s are free, but you must add them to the booking. There are 100 stairs between two levels (16 m apart) and no wheelchair or pram access, so bring a front carrier. Quiet is needed for part of the tour. Discover Waitomo’s official line is that if a child becomes unsettled and you can’t settle them, “your guide will advise you on what to do.” Book a time just after a feed and a nap.

Can I take a pushchair or stroller?

  • Ruakuri Cave: yes, up to 65 cm wide and 130 cm high. Discover Waitomo’s “preferred methods of care are pushchairs, front carriers, or holding an adult’s hand.” Back carriers are not permitted without prior approval from cave staff. Expect over 1 km of walking, with a descent and climb of about 50 m.
  • Glowworm Cave and Aranui: no wheelchair or pushchair access. The Glowworm Cave has 100 stairs, so use a carrier. Aranui was closed for maintenance when we checked on 31 October 2026.
  • Spellbound: no prams; a backpack carrier is fine. The walk includes “several short (30 m) steep sections and a few stairs” on gravel paths.
  • Mangapohue Natural Bridge: the DOC track is pushchair-friendly along the boardwalk and becomes stepped where it passes under the arch.
  • DOC Ruakuri Walk: not a pram walk. DOC warns of many stairs and steep, muddy sections, and says it’s “only suitable for people with good mobility.”

What age can kids do black water rafting?

Black Labyrinth: 12+ and at least 45 kg. Black Abyss: 16+ and at least 45 kg. The maximum weight is 130 kg. Kids don’t need to be able to swim, but they must be “comfortable in fast running water, darkness” and on uneven ground, and guides can refuse anyone they think is unsuited, including anyone “too small”. The water is 10–14 °C, and wetsuits, boots and helmets are provided. Bring togs and a towel (towels aren’t supplied, though you can buy one in the shop). Cameras and GoPros aren’t allowed; you can buy photos afterwards. There are hot showers and lockers on site. Our Black Labyrinth review covers the trip in detail.

What does a Waitomo family day cost in 2026–27?

About NZD 290–510 for a family of four for one cave experience plus the Kiwi House. A free under-4, free museum entry for kids and the free night walk can bring that down noticeably.

Rules that change the maths:

  • At Discover Waitomo a child is 4–14 inclusive. A 15-year-old pays the adult price, and you may be asked for proof of age.
  • Extra children can only be added to a family pass (Glowworm Cave, Ruakuri and the combos).
  • Discover Waitomo charges a 2% credit card fee.
  • Spellbound charges for children of all ages under 15. Babies aren’t free there, but there’s no cap on how many children get the family-group rate.
  • The Kiwi House family pass covers up to 3 children aged 5–15. A 16-year-old counts as an adult.

Cost scenarios

FamilyPlanCost (NZD)Notes
2 adults + kids aged 6 and 9Glowworm Cave family pass + Kiwi House family pass$292 ($217 + $75)The cheapest way to see the glowworm boat ride and kiwi in one day.
Spellbound Explorer + Kiwi House$369 ($294 + $75)A longer raft ride, photos allowed, 12 people at most.
Top Cave Combo + Kiwi House$507 ($432 + $75)Two big walking caves, but no glowworm boat ride, and Aranui must have reopened.
2 adults + kids aged 7, 5 and 2Glowworm Cave family pass + one extra child; toddler free (but booked)$248 ($217 + $31)Carry the toddler. Add the Kiwi House: $75 covers 2 adults and 3 children, and under-5s are free anyway.
Troll Cave (whole group) + Kiwi House$255 ($180 + $75)Good if your 7-year-old wants adventure. Not recommended under age 1.
Spellbound Explorer$332 (2 × $109 + 3 × $38)The toddler pays. No pram, and the operator recommends it from age 4, so it’s not our pick for this family.
2 adults + teens aged 13 and 16Black Labyrinth: 3 adults + 1 youth$751 (3 × $199 + $154)The family pass ($589) needs 2 youths aged 15 or under, so a 16-year-old doesn’t qualify.
Glowworm Cave: 3 adults + 1 child$294 (3 × $85 + $39)The 16-year-old pays the adult price.
Hobbiton family pass (both teens count as youth, 11–17)$332A good teen add-on on the Auckland–Waitomo route.

Total day budget (family of four, primary-age kids): tours cost $290–$510, plus about $80–$150 for food (a café lunch, snacks, ice creams) and fuel on top. That puts a realistic day at about NZD 370–660 plus fuel, before accommodation. The food figures are our estimates, not operator prices.

Our Waitomo Caves cost guide has every price, and the combo tours guide compares the bundles.

Where should a family stay?

If you want to walk to the caves, stay at Waitomo TOP 10 Holiday Park in the village. If Waitomo is full, base yourself in Ōtorohanga (the Kiwi House and a supermarket), about 15 minutes away.

  • Waitomo TOP 10 Holiday Park (12 Waitomo Village Rd), about 600 m from the Glowworm Cave. It has a pool, a free hot tub, a playground with a trampoline, table tennis, outdoor chess, a communal kitchen and BBQs. Deluxe cabins sleep up to 7, and there are 4- and 6-berth motel units. A parent tip from reviews: the pool can be too cold and the hot tub too hot for toddlers. The park’s own FAQ describes a cold-water pool, while some third-party listings say “heated”, so treat it as unheated. Ask the park about its summer no-dogs period if you travel with a pet.
  • Waitomo Homestead Cabins (run by Discover Waitomo). Look at the Cave & Quad Cabin Combo on waitomo.com (the Glowworm Cave, Ruakuri and one night in a quad cabin). Its terms warn that “due to limited capacity, your combo may be booked over multiple days.”
  • Ōtorohanga options, including Otorohanga Kiwi Holiday Park, which lists a five-bedroom Park House that sleeps 13 and a seasonal heated pool. The Kiwi House is a short walk away.

To see what’s free on your dates, search family stays in Waitomo Caves or family stays in Ōtorohanga. Our full guide to where to stay near Waitomo Caves compares every base.

Practical survival kit for parents

Toilets, baby change and food

  • Food inside caves: “No smoking, food, drink or litter are permitted inside the caves.” Feed everyone before check-in.
  • Cafés: the Waitomo Glowworm Caves Café (8am–4pm daily, closed Christmas Day); Waitomo Homestead (8am–4pm, the black water rafting base); Long Black Café (8am–3pm). We couldn’t confirm baby-change facilities at specific buildings, so use the visitor centres and cafés before you head underground, and assume there are no toilets inside the caves.
  • Picnic plan: in January the village cafés get busy around noon. A supermarket shop in Ōtorohanga or Te Kūiti saves money and stops queue meltdowns.

Car sickness and road time

  • Auckland to Waitomo is about 195 km, roughly 2.5–3 hours, via SH1 and SH39 (or SH3). Holiday traffic out of Auckland can add more.
  • Te Anga Road to Mangapohue (25 km from the village) is sealed but winding. Give car-sick kids a front-facing window seat, stop halfway, and go easy on the snacks just before.
  • New Zealand law: NZTA (Waka Kotahi) says all children travelling in a car must be in a child restraint until they turn 7, and if there’s a child restraint in the car they must use it until they turn 8. NZTA also recommends a restraint until a child is 148 cm tall. If you’re hiring a car, book car seats in advance.
  • More: getting to Waitomo and Auckland to Rotorua via Waitomo and Hobbiton.

Nap timing

  • Plan the cave for first thing in the morning, then let the kids nap in the car on the way to the Kiwi House or a lunch spot.
  • Don’t book a cave tour straight after a long drive. Arrive, let the kids run around at the playground or the museum, then go underground.

Sun safety

  • New Zealand’s summer UV is extreme: NIWA puts typical peak midday UV Index values in summer in Auckland and northern regions at around 12–13 (11+ counts as extreme), and Cancer Society NZ’s SunSmart advisor Hazel Potterton warns, “Even on cloudy days, you can burn within minutes.” Use hats, SPF 50 and rash shirts for pool time at the holiday park. The caves give you a natural midday break from the sun.

Photography

  • Glowworm Cave: no photos or video at all. Professional photos are on sale afterwards.
  • Ruakuri: photos and video allowed (Aranui too, once it reopens). Spellbound has fixed camera stations, but no tripods.
  • Black water rafting: no cameras or GoPros. Buy the tour photos instead.

Packing checklist

  • A warm layer for everyone. Discover Waitomo’s FAQ puts the Glowworm Cave at 16 °C year-round; Ruakuri is about 15 °C and damp.
  • Closed shoes with grip (no jandals in the caves)
  • A front carrier for under-2s (back carriers need approval in Ruakuri, and prams are allowed only in Ruakuri)
  • Togs and a towel for the Black Labyrinth (towels aren’t supplied), plus shampoo or body wash for the hot showers
  • A torch or headlamp for the night Ruakuri Walk (red-light mode is kinder to glowworms)
  • Snacks and water for before and after (none allowed inside the caves)
  • Sunscreen, hats and sunglasses
  • Basic first aid: plasters, antiseptic wipes, child pain relief and a motion-sickness remedy
  • Booking confirmations with every child listed by name, including free under-4s
  • Proof of age for teens on the cusp of the 12+, 15 and 16+ limits
  • A change of clothes for little ones (the Troll Cave has “minor water splashes”, and DOC tracks can be muddy)

More: what to wear in Waitomo Caves.

What can families do in Waitomo when it rains?

Go underground: caves are a classic rainy-day activity. Then head to the Kiwi House and the museum.

  • Cave tours usually run in rain. Discover Waitomo can cancel for “health and safety concerns, weather conditions”, and if it does, you get a 100% refund. Spellbound says “it takes a lot of rain to make our river flood,” and if it cancels it will refund or rebook you.
  • Black water rafting can be called off after prolonged heavy rain raises the water levels, so have a dry-cave backup ready.
  • Kiwi House: the nocturnal kiwi houses are indoors, and tickets are valid for two days, so you can come back for a keeper talk you missed.
  • Waitomo Caves Museum & Discovery Centre (21 Waitomo Village Rd): glowworm and fossil exhibits, caving films, and a crawl-through cave that kids love. Kids 4–14 get in free with a paying adult; see waitomocavesmuseum.nz.
  • Troll Cave: it’s underground, so the weather doesn’t matter.

Cancellation and refund rules by operator are in our guide to Waitomo rain, cancellations and refunds.

Things to do with kids beyond the caves

  • Ōtorohanga Kiwi House (15 minutes away): kiwi in nocturnal houses, plus a dome aviary. Daily keeper talks: kiwi at 10:30am, 1:30pm and 3:30pm; kea and kākā at 11am; kākāriki at 12pm; longfin eels at 2:30pm. Behind-the-scenes tours cost NZD 45 for an adult and NZD 35 for a child (minimum 2 people), booked direct on kiwihouse.org.nz. Without a car, the Waitomo Glowworms, Blue Springs & Kiwi House day tour from Auckland covers the Glowworm Cave and the Kiwi House ($187, 4.8/5 from 64 reviews).
  • Free night glowworms: the DOC Ruakuri Walk, 4 km from the village. DOC says glowworms are best “beside the main bridge”. Bring a torch, keep children supervised and on the track, and watch the steps.
  • Mangapohue Natural Bridge: DOC describes the track as pushchair-friendly, following a boardwalk through a limestone gorge to a 17 m high limestone arch that “is all that remains of an ancient cave system”, after which the track becomes stepped. It starts on Te Anga Road, 25 km from Waitomo Village, and third-party listings put it at a 700 m return walk of about 20 minutes. Continue to Marokopa Falls if the kids are still happy.
  • Troll Cave: a story-led underground mission of about an hour for up to 8 people, at NZD 180 per group. One parent-reviewer’s 7- and 10-year-olds found it “terrifying” in the best way. One listing mentions groups of up to 10 and Wednesday-to-Sunday departures, so check the current days with Waitomo Adventures (0800 WAITOMO).
  • Further afield (day trips): Hamilton Zoo and Hamilton Gardens (about 1 hour), the Raglan beaches, Kāwhia’s hot water beach (tide-dependent), and Hobbiton on the way to or from Rotorua. Confirm hours and tides before you go.

Our Hobbiton and Waitomo combo guide covers pairing the two in one day, and our guide to alternative glowworm cave tours compares Spellbound, Okohua (The Waitomo Experience: Okohua Glowworm Cave Tour, $151, 5.0/5 from 167 reviews; ages 12 and up) and the smaller operators.

Sample family itineraries for January

  • 9:45am: a toilet stop and run-around at the Waitomo Caves Museum (kids free).
  • 10:30am: the Waitomo Glowworm Cave (check in by 10:00 for a 10:30 tour).
  • 11:30am: lunch at the Glowworm Caves Café, or a picnic.

Are Waitomo caves suitable for babies? Yes. Under-4s are free on Discover Waitomo tours but must be booked. Bring a front carrier for the Glowworm Cave (100 stairs) or use a pushchair in Ruakuri (up to 65 cm wide). If your baby won’t settle, the guide will advise you.

Do I need to book a free under-4? Yes. Discover Waitomo says children under 4 “will still need to be added to your total booking” to secure their place. Boats are capped at 23 people.

What is the Discover Waitomo family pass? Two adults and two children aged 4–14. You can add extra children at a reduced rate, but only with a family pass. A 15-year-old counts as an adult.

How much is the Waitomo family pass in 2026–27? NZD 217 for the Glowworm Cave (extra child NZD 31), NZD 296 for Ruakuri (extra child NZD 44), and NZD 432 for the Most Popular and Top Cave combos (extra child NZD 62 on the Top Cave Combo).

What’s the minimum age for black water rafting in Waitomo? 12 years and 45 kg for the Black Labyrinth; 16 years and 45 kg for the Black Abyss.

Can a 12-year-old under 45 kg do the Black Labyrinth? Not according to the published rules. The 45 kg minimum applies, and guides can refuse anyone they think is “too small”.

Which Waitomo cave is best for toddlers? The Glowworm Cave for the boat ride (short, and free for under-4s) if you can carry them. Ruakuri if you need the pushchair.

Is the Glowworm Cave scary for kids? It’s dark and silent, not spooky, and most kids love it. Practise whispering and talk through what glowworms are beforehand.

Is Spellbound good for kids? Yes for ages 4+. The tour takes 2.5 hours with a 20-minute glowworm raft ride, in groups of up to 12. No prams, and all children under 15 pay the child rate.

Can we see glowworms for free? Yes. Walk the DOC Ruakuri Walk after dark (the glowworms are best by the main bridge) with a torch, and keep the kids close.

Is Waitomo open on Christmas Day? Partly. Ruakuri, black water rafting, the Kiwi House and Hobbiton are closed on 25 December. Discover Waitomo’s terms indicate its other experiences are open every day.

What happens if we’re late? At Discover Waitomo, your tickets are forfeited and non-refundable. Check in 30 minutes before your tour (20 minutes at Spellbound).

What can we cancel? Discover Waitomo gives a full refund if you cancel by phone more than 24 hours before the first tour; within 24 hours there’s no refund.

Prices, ages and rules come from the operators’ own websites: Discover Waitomo (terms and conditions, FAQs, the Ruakuri health and safety page, the Top Cave Combo and Black Labyrinth pages), Spellbound (the Glowworm & Cave Explorer page), the Ōtorohanga Kiwi House (pricing page), Waitomo Adventures (the Troll Cave page), the Waitomo Caves Museum (Plan Your Visit), Hobbiton Movie Set Tours, and the Department of Conservation (the Ruakuri Walk and Mangapohue Natural Bridge pages). School term windows are the Ministry of Education’s, as published in the New Zealand Gazette. Where sources conflict (the TOP 10 pool heating, the Troll Cave group size), we’ve said so in the text.
