Where to Stay Near Waitomo Caves: Village, Ōtorohanga, Te Kūiti or Hamilton

Where to stay for Waitomo Caves in summer 2026–27: the village, Ōtorohanga, Hangatiki, Te Kūiti or Hamilton, our picks by traveller type, campervan rules and Christmas booking dates.

Updated October 2026

For most visitors, Waitomo Caves village is the best place to spend at least one night, if you can get a bed. That usually means Waitomo TOP 10 Holiday Park, with a pool, a hot tub, motels and cabins a short walk from the Glowworm Cave. Couples should look at Waitomo Caves Guest Lodge, and Woodlyn Park has the plane, train, ship and hobbit-hole rooms. If the village is full, base yourself in Ōtorohanga or at Hangatiki Junction, both 10 to 15 minutes’ drive away, and use Hamilton only if you’re pairing Waitomo with Hobbiton or want city restaurants.

The village has only a handful of places to sleep, and the historic Waitomo Caves Hotel is closed. New Zealand’s summer school holidays start no later than Saturday, December 19, 2026 and run until schools go back between January 28 and February 3, 2027, so village beds go weeks ahead. Book the bed before the cave tour: the tours have far more places than the village has rooms. Room rates change daily, so check the live price for your dates. The calendar below is for the Ruakuri Cave walking tour, the 90-minute cave you can add on the morning after a night in the village.

When to book for Christmas and New Year?As early as you can; school holidays start no later than Saturday, December 19, 2026

If you’re spending a night or two in the area, the wider Waikato and King Country has more to book around the caves: black water rafting through Ruakuri Cave, small-group glowworm trips at Spellbound and Okohua, Hobbiton near Matamata, and the geothermal parks of Rotorua, two hours east.

Should you stay overnight in Waitomo or do a day trip?

Staying overnight is the better plan if you can manage it. A day trip from Auckland (about 2.5 hours each way) or Rotorua (about 2 hours each way) works, but it puts you in the busiest midday tour slots and leaves no slack if the weather disrupts a tour.

What a night in the area gets you:

  • Wild glowworms for free. The Department of Conservation says of the Ruakuri Walk: “You can see glowworms on this track at night. The best place is beside the main bridge.” Take a torch for the walk in. The track has many steps and steep sections, and DOC says it is “only suitable for people with good mobility.”
  • Early or late cave slots, before the day trips from Auckland arrive or after they leave.
  • A spare day for rain. Heavy rain can cancel the water-based trips; our rain, cancellations and refunds guide covers who refunds what.
  • Time for the Marokopa road: Mangapohue Natural Bridge, Piripiri Cave and Marokopa Falls, west of the village.
  • Dinner without the drive. Village kitchens close early (one Tripadvisor reviewer’s tip: “last service is 8pm”), so being able to walk back helps.

How many nights?

The two-cave combos are sold only on waitomo.com, and our tickets and booking guide explains how they work. If you’d rather book one cave on GetYourGuide, the Waitomo Caves: Ruakuri Glowworm Cave Guided Walking Tour (4.7/5 from 1,405 reviews, from $65) has free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. Our Glowworm Cave vs Ruakuri comparison helps you choose between the two.

Our verdict: the village first, Ōtorohanga or Hangatiki second, Te Kūiti third, and Hamilton only with a reason (Hobbiton, the airport, a city dinner). To compare what’s free on your dates, search all stays in Waitomo Caves, all stays in Ōtorohanga, all stays in Hangatiki, all stays in Te Kūiti or all stays in Hamilton.

Our picks: where to stay near Waitomo Caves

Our pick: Waitomo TOP 10 Holiday Park

Best for: families, campervans, mixed groups, and anyone who wants to walk to the cave.

  • Where: 12 Waitomo Village Road, in the middle of the village. The park gives the walk to the cave as 500 to 600 metres on its own pages.
  • Room types: park motels (4- and 6-berth), en-suite units, deluxe cabins for up to 7 people, double cabins, and powered and unpowered sites.
  • Facilities: the park’s FAQ lists “a cold-water pool and hot tub”, a playground with a trampoline, a communal kitchen, laundry, barbecues, a Sky TV room, a dump station and EV chargers. Free Wi-Fi is capped at 1 GB a day (unlimited for TOP 10 Club members).
  • Reviews: 4.5/5 from 1,082 reviews on Tripadvisor and 9.2/10 from 311 on Expedia when the article was researched in October 2026.
  • Summer rules: reception is open 9am to 8pm from December to February. Dogs aren’t allowed from December 20 to February 7; the rest of the year pets come by arrangement at NZD 10 per pet per night.
  • Cancellation (direct bookings): a 25% fee if you cancel more than 72 hours before arrival, and 100% within 72 hours. Online bookings are paid in full, with a 2.5% card fee. Bookings made through a third party follow that platform’s policy, which is a good reason to compare a free-cancellation rate on Booking.com.
  • Drawbacks: it books out early in the school holidays, the pool is unheated, and the Wi-Fi is capped.

Best for couples: Waitomo Caves Guest Lodge

  • Where: 7 Waitomo Village Road, opposite Huhu and next to the General Store. You can walk to the Glowworm Cave; reviewers put it at about half a kilometre.
  • What it is: a small, family-run B&B with chalet-style rooms up a bush-clad slope, continental breakfast included, a barbecue, microwave and laundry, and EV charging according to the Waitomo Caves Discovery Centre listing.
  • Reviews: 4.6/5 from 691 reviews on Tripadvisor; 8.7 on Booking.com.
  • Drawbacks: the paths to the rooms are uneven and some have steps, so it doesn’t suit limited mobility. Breakfast is continental, not cooked, and a few reviewers mention soft mattresses.
  • Book: Waitomo Caves Guest Lodge on Booking.com.

Best unusual stay: Woodlyn Park (plane, train, ship and hobbit-hole motels)

  • Where: 1177 Waitomo Valley Road; the owners describe it as “just 2 minutes from the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves.”
  • What it is: 10 motel units on 10 acres: “2 under hill cave Units” (the hobbit holes), “The Waitanic Ship with 5 suites,” “The Bristol Freighter plane with 2 units” (the Cockpit and the Tail), and the Waitomo Express train carriage. Every unit has a private en-suite, a kitchen and housekeeping.
  • Reviews: about 8/10 on Booking.com from more than 450 reviews, and 3.9/5 from 369 on Tripadvisor, where several 2025–26 reviews call it “tired” and one January 2026 review reports a musty smell in a hobbit unit. The owners themselves warn that the units have “a slightly lingering aroma from their industrial past.”
  • Know before you book: “no one lives on site”, and the office is open 9am to 5pm, so arrange a late arrival the day before. The ship’s lower cabins involve stairs and a raised ledge, which one reviewer found hard for elderly parents. Booked through the i-SITE (Bookeasy), you lose 100% if you cancel 48 hours or less before arrival.
  • Our take: book it for the story, which children love, not for polish. Reviewers’ tip: in the plane, ask for the Cockpit.
  • Book: Woodlyn Park Motel on Booking.com.

Best adults-only B&B: Abseil Inn

  • Where: 709 Waitomo Caves Road, on a ridge above the village, a short drive from the caves and walkable to the places to eat.
  • What it is: a four-room adults-only B&B with en-suites, air-conditioning, a large breakfast (reviewers like the honey tasting), a garden and an outdoor fireplace.
  • Reviews: 8.9 on Booking.com from about 300 reviews; 4.3/5 from 225 on Tripadvisor.
  • Drawbacks: the driveway is “extremely steep and narrow”, and there are no children or pets.
  • Book: Abseil Inn on Booking.com.

Budget pick: YHA Waitomo Juno Hall

  • Where: 600 Waitomo Caves Road, about 1 to 1.5 km from the village (a 10- to 15-minute walk), opposite the Legendary Black Water Rafting Co.
  • What it is: a 40-bed hostel on a working farm with dorms, private and family rooms, tent and campervan sites, a saltwater pool open in high season, a tennis court and farm animals. It’s pet-friendly.
  • Reviews: 4.7/5 from 415 reviews on Google.
  • Drawbacks: one reviewer mentions thin mattresses and no reading lights, and rooms can be tight.
  • Book: we couldn’t find it listed on Booking.com, so book with YHA or search stays near YHA Waitomo Juno Hall.

Budget pick in the village: Waitomo Village Chalets, Home of Kiwipaka

  • Status: still operating in October 2026, under the name “Waitomo Village Chalets – Home of Kiwipaka.”
  • Where: Hotel Access Road, in the village, about a 10- to 12-minute walk from the Glowworm Cave.
  • What it is: 20 private chalets (queen, twin, a loft for four and a family unit with kitchenette for five) plus a lodge with dorms, with sunny decks.
  • Reviews: 8.1 on Booking.com; 4/5 on Tripadvisor. Some guests didn’t realise part of it is a backpackers, so pick a chalet if you want privacy.
  • Book: Waitomo Village Chalets on Booking.com.

Best cabin and cave combo: Waitomo Homestead Cabins (Discover Waitomo)

  • Where: 584 State Highway 3 at Hangatiki, which Discover Waitomo puts at “just 10 minutes from the famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves”. The cave operator runs it, with a café and gift shop on site.
  • Rooms and prices (official, checked October 24, 2026): twin cabin from NZD 130 a night with two king single beds; quad cabin from NZD 160 a night, for a minimum of three people. Bathrooms are shared, with private hot showers and toilets, and there’s a communal kitchen, a lounge, coin laundry and free Wi-Fi. There’s no minimum stay.
  • Combos: on October 24, 2026 the operator’s deals page listed a Cave and Family Cabin Combo from NZD 592 for a family, and its terms also name a Black Labyrinth and Twin Cabin Combo (minimum two adults). Check the deals page for the current line-up.
  • Reviews: booking sites show about 7.5/10 from 245 reviews; one reviewer said the cabins have “no furniture except a bed, fan & heater.”
  • Check before you book: some Booking.com-derived listings mention private bathrooms and queen rooms that the official page doesn’t show, so confirm the room type.
  • Book: Waitomo Homestead Cabins on Booking.com.

Best if the village is full: Ōtorohanga and Hangatiki

  • Otorohanga Kiwi Holiday Park (20 Huiputea Drive, about 15 minutes from the caves) has two-bedroom motels, studio units, cabins, a five-bedroom Park House that sleeps 13, a 28-bed group lodge, a heated saltwater pool and spa pools (seasonal), a playground and powered sites. It’s pet-friendly, its self check-in kiosk runs from 1pm to 11:30pm, and the Kiwi House is a 14- to 20-minute walk away. Best for big families and late arrivals.
  • Caves Motor Inn (728 SH3, Hangatiki Junction; 8 km from Ōtorohanga, 11 km from Te Kūiti, about 10 minutes from the caves) is a motor lodge with rooms serviced daily and a licensed restaurant and bar serving breakfast and dinner Monday to Friday. It scores about 8/10 on Hotels.com, with some reviewers calling it “outdated.” Booked through CamperMate (BookIt), the cancellation fee is one night if you cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice.

Te Kūiti: for the Spellbound and Okohua side and heading south

  • Waitomo Lodge Motel (62 Te Kumi Road, Te Kūiti, about 15 minutes from the Glowworm Cave) has studios and family rooms, some with spa baths, and no breakfast; reviewers recommend Bosco Cafe across the road. Several reviewers mention train noise.
  • The council campground has gone: the council-run Te Kūiti Holiday Park closed on Monday, July 14, 2025 after a council vote on May 27. Waitomo District Council’s July 8, 2025 release says “the motorhome dump station will remain operational.”

If you stay at the Woolshed, the The Waitomo Experience: Okohua Glowworm Cave Tour (5.0/5 from 159 reviews, from $151) starts on the same farm.

Not an option right now: the historic Waitomo Caves Hotel

The 1908 heritage hotel above the village, extended in 1928 and listed Category 2, is closed; the Waitomo Caves Discovery Centre lists it as “currently closed.” King Country News reported in October 2025 that it was housing workers from Taharoa Ironsands, not tourists. If it appears on an old listing, don’t book it. The Waitomo Caves Museum covers its history, ghost stories included.

Booking for Christmas, New Year and the school holidays

Key dates for 2026–27:

  • Term 4 ends no later than Friday, December 18, 2026, and the summer holidays start no later than Saturday, December 19, 2026.
  • Term 1 2027 starts between Thursday, January 28 and Wednesday, February 3, 2027, so expect busy weekends until early February.
  • Public holidays: Christmas Day, Friday, December 25; Boxing Day, Saturday, December 26 (observed Monday, December 28); New Year’s Day, Friday, January 1, 2027; and the day after New Year’s Day, Saturday, January 2 (observed Monday, January 4, 2027). Many cafés and restaurants add a public-holiday surcharge; the Restaurant Association told the NZ Herald that “the typical surcharge is 15%”. Ask before you order.

How to book:

  1. Book the bed first, then the cave tour. The tours have far more places than the village has beds.
  2. Pick a free-cancellation rate where one is offered (on Booking.com, filter for “Free cancellation”), then refine your plans later.
  3. Read the direct-booking terms. TOP 10 (25% or 100% either side of 72 hours), Woodlyn Park through the i-SITE (100% within 48 hours) and Caves Motor Inn (one night within 24 hours) all differ.
  4. Expect minimum stays at peak. We found no published minimum-stay rule at TOP 10, and Discover Waitomo’s cabins say “No minimum stay”, but holiday parks and holiday homes often add one over Christmas and New Year, and the booking engine shows it at checkout.
  5. Arriving late? Woodlyn Park’s office closes at 5pm and TOP 10’s reception at 8pm in summer. Otorohanga Kiwi Holiday Park’s self check-in runs to 11:30pm.

Our Christmas and New Year guide has the day-by-day opening times, the Waitomo Caves cost guide has the 2026–27 ticket prices, and the best time to visit covers the quieter months.

Campervans and freedom camping at Waitomo

Best for campervans: Waitomo TOP 10, with powered all-weather sites, a dump station and a walk to the cave. YHA Juno Hall also has powered and tent sites.

Freedom camping rules (Waitomo District Council, Freedom Camping Bylaw 2023):

  • You may park overnight in a certified self-contained vehicle in public areas “as long as there are no restrictions in place.”
  • Sites are colour-coded: red is prohibited; blue is self-contained only; yellow is self-contained and non-self-contained; teal is self-contained, non-self-contained and tents.
  • In preferred locations: two consecutive nights at most, leave before 9am, no fires, and take your rubbish with you.
  • National changes in 2023: “vehicles with a portable toilet will no longer be certified self-contained,” and the infringement fee rose from NZD 200 to NZD 400.
  • Check the council’s bylaw maps before you park; app pins can be out of date.

Marokopa Holiday Park (on the west coast, under an hour from Waitomo) is a council-owned “KiwiCamp” site where you pay with a Penny (KiwiCash) key, which you need to get before you arrive, from the council or the Te Kūiti i-SITE. There are “no shops or fuel in Marokopa,” so stock up first. Refurbished facilities, moved from the closed Te Kūiti park, arrived in November 2025. Penny’s booking page listed unpowered sites at NZD 35 a night (up to six people), powered sites at NZD 45, a fishing cabin at NZD 50 and a pod at NZD 60 (“Strictly NO CHILDREN” in the pod) when this guide was researched in October 2026; an older 2025 forum post quoted NZD 20 per vehicle, so confirm the live rate.

Dump stations: Waitomo TOP 10 (on site), and the Te Kūiti dump station at the former holiday park, which stays open.

Food, supplies, fuel and EV charging

  • Huhu Café (10 Waitomo Caves Rd) is the village’s best-reviewed dinner spot (4.6 on Tripadvisor from 1,954 reviews). Its hours vary by season and the listings disagree; one shows Wednesday and Thursday 5–8pm, Friday and Saturday 12–9pm, Sunday 12–8pm, and closed Monday and Tuesday. Book dinner ahead in summer.
  • Tomo Bar & Eatery serves pub meals, listed at roughly 5–10pm on weekdays and from midday at weekends; listings disagree, so check.
  • The General Store (Twelve Table) sells groceries, souvenirs, breakfast and drinks, and is listed as open daily 8am–7pm.
  • Supermarket: there’s none in the village. The nearest is New World Ōtorohanga, about 15 minutes away. Shop before you arrive if you’re self-catering on Christmas Day, when most supermarkets are closed by law.
  • EV charging: TOP 10 and the Guest Lodge offer charging (conditions apply), a Tesla destination charger is listed at 21 Waitomo Village Rd, and a 50 kW OpenLoop DC charger is listed at Bell Lane, Ōtorohanga.
  • Fuel: fill up in Ōtorohanga or Te Kūiti. Marokopa has no fuel.

Common pain points (from forums and reviews)

  • “Everything was full.” The village has few beds, so have a fallback in Ōtorohanga or Hangatiki ready.
  • “The restaurants closed early, or we couldn’t get a table.” Book Huhu, or plan a barbecue at your accommodation.
  • “No supermarket.” Shop in Ōtorohanga or Te Kūiti.
  • “The steep driveway” and “the steps”. Those are Abseil Inn and the Guest Lodge; mention it if you’re travelling with older relatives.
  • “We booked the hotel and it was closed.” The historic Waitomo Caves Hotel isn’t operating.
  • “Do we need a car?” In practice, yes, unless you stay in the village and only do the tours that start there.

If you’d rather spend the extra day underground, the From Auckland: Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves Day Trip with Lunch (4.9/5 from more than 3,000 reviews, from $202) is the no-car alternative, and the Waitomo Caves: Labyrinth Black Water Rafting Experience (4.9/5 from 1,857 reviews, from $113) is the trip most overnight visitors add; our black water rafting guide compares it with the alternatives.
