Which Waitomo Tour to Book: A Pick for Every Kind of Traveller

Spellbound, the Glowworm Cave combo, Ruakuri, Black Labyrinth, Okohua or the Lost World? Prices, age and weight limits, photo rules, access and rain rules for each Waitomo tour, with a pick for families, teens, thrill-seekers and wheelchair users.

Updated October 2026

If you can do only one thing at Waitomo, book Spellbound’s Glowworm & Cave Explorer: NZD 109 for an adult, a raft ride of about 20 minutes under a dense glowworm ceiling, 12 people at most, and you can take photos. If the famous boat ride is what you came for, book Discover Waitomo’s Most Popular Combo, the Glowworm Cave plus Ruakuri, from NZD 179. Teenagers who want to get wet should do the Black Labyrinth, and adrenaline seekers the Black Abyss or the Lost World. Anyone using a wheelchair or pushchair should book Ruakuri, the only show cave in Waitomo you can do on wheels.

Prices on this page are in NZD including GST, from the operators’ own sites; Discover Waitomo’s prices apply from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027. Aranui Cave was still closed for maintenance when we checked on 31 October 2026, so leave it out of your plans until the operator’s page says it has reopened.

Ruakuri is the cave many of the picks below come back to: it suits toddlers, wheelchair users, photographers and rainy days, and you can book it on its own. The calendar is for the 90-minute Ruakuri tour on GetYourGuide (4.7/5 from 1,409 reviews, from $65).

Quick answers

  • Which Waitomo cave is best? For glowworms, Spellbound. For the classic boat ride, the Waitomo Glowworm Cave. For scale, formations and wheelchair access, Ruakuri. Our three-cave comparison goes through each one.
  • Best for kids under 4? Ruakuri: pushchairs are welcome and under-4s go free.
  • Best for teens? The Black Labyrinth, from age 12 and 45 kg.
  • Can I take photos? Yes at Ruakuri, Aranui, Spellbound, Okohua (where the photos are also included) and Down to Earth. No in the Waitomo Glowworm Cave or on Legendary Black Water Rafting Co. trips.
  • Wheelchair accessible? Only Ruakuri. Discover Waitomo’s safety page takes wheelchairs and pushchairs up to 65 cm wide and 130 cm high, on walkways no steeper than 1:10.
  • Should I try black water rafting? Yes if you’re 12 or older, confident in water and want more than 45 minutes underground. Skip it if you hate cold water or small spaces.
  • Cheapest glowworms? Free, on the DOC Ruakuri Walk after dark.
  • Rainy day? The dry walking caves usually still run. The wet river trips are the ones most likely to be cancelled.

Waitomo sits in the King Country between Auckland, Hamilton and Rotorua, so many visitors fit the caves into a longer trip: Hobbiton Movie Set at Matamata, day trips from Auckland that pair Hobbiton with the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, black water rafting in the Ruakuri system, and Rotorua’s geothermal parks and Te Puia.

  • Yes: go to question 3.

  • Ropes and heights (16+): the Black Abyss (NZD 332).
  • Once in a lifetime (10+ or 15+): the Lost World Half Day (NZD 675, dry) or the Lost World Epic (NZD 985, wet, all day).

Glowworm Cave vs Ruakuri vs Aranui: which Discover Waitomo cave?

Short answer: the Glowworm Cave for the boat ride, Ruakuri for everything else, and Aranui as an add-on for formation lovers once it reopens.

  • Waitomo Glowworm Cave (NZD 85, 45 minutes): the original cave, opened to paying visitors in 1889 by chief Tane Tinorau and his wife Huti. You walk through the Cathedral chamber and then glide through the Glowworm Grotto by boat, up to 23 people per boat. There are 100 stairs, no wheelchair access and no photos. Reviewers often say it feels short for the price, that the boat section lasts only minutes, and that a green-screen souvenir photo is sold afterwards.
  • Ruakuri Cave (NZD 122, 1.5 hours): a spiral entrance, a walk of over 1 km with a descent and ascent of around 50 m, glowworms up close on foot, underground waterfalls and photos in designated areas. It’s fully accessible. You need a car, because it starts at its own visitor centre a short drive from the village.
  • Aranui Cave (NZD 85, 1 hour): delicate formations, photos allowed, stairs and no wheelchairs. A third-party guide states it has no glowworms, and the operator doesn’t tag it for glowworms either. It was closed for maintenance on 31 October 2026.

Our call: with 2.5 hours, book the Most Popular Combo (NZD 179) over the Glowworm Cave alone. Our three-cave comparison and the head-to-head of the Glowworm Cave vs Ruakuri go through each cave in detail, and the Ruakuri Cave guide covers the accessible route.

Spellbound vs Waitomo Glowworm Cave: which has better glowworms?

Short answer: Spellbound, in most visitor reports, and you can photograph them.

Spellbound is a family-run operation about 15 minutes south of the village. A van takes you across a farm, you walk to the Mangawhitikau glowworm cave, and you spend up to an hour inside, including a raft ride of about 20 minutes with headlamps off. The Explorer adds the dry Cave of the Spirit, with fossils and formations, and a tea break. Spellbound describes itself as the cave filmed by Sir David Attenborough and the BBC. Tripadvisor forum regulars mostly agree it has the better display, though one poster saw “only a few glow worms” and another noted that the display changes with water levels.

Black Labyrinth vs Black Abyss vs Okohua vs Haggas: which wet adventure?

Legendary includes all the gear (wetsuit, boots, helmet, tube, and the abseil kit on the Abyss) plus hot showers and lockers. You bring swimwear and a towel, because towels aren’t supplied. The water stays cold all year, around 10–15°C, so summer doesn’t make it warmer. Our own Black Labyrinth review found it “more physical than ‘floating down a river’ suggests,” with a low-ceiling section you go through flat on your back. Our guide to black water rafting at Waitomo has the play-by-play.

Should you go black water rafting? Yes if you’re 12 or older, at least 45 kg and comfortable in cold, dark, moving water: the glowworm float is the closest you’ll get to them. No if you’re claustrophobic, pregnant or have one of the conditions Legendary lists (heart, spinal, epilepsy and others). Okohua is the upgrade. Reviewers praise the group of six and the free photos, and it has 5.0/5 from 164 reviews on GetYourGuide. Note its upper age limit of 67.

Discover Waitomo’s FAQ says the Labyrinth and Abyss “depart daily,” while a package page says the Labyrinth runs Thursday to Sunday and the contact page says the Abyss “has limited availability.” Check your exact summer dates when you book, because the schedule can change through the year.

Lost World Half Day vs Lost World Epic

Which to pick: the Half Day for the abseil, the Epic if you want a full day underground and can commit to it.

  • Half Day (NZD 675, 4 hours, 10+, 40 kg+): a 100 m free-hanging abseil, about 20 minutes on the rope beside your guide, with four guests per guide at most. You then walk out dry, by ladders and the 30 m “Stairway to Heaven.” Because it’s dry, rain rarely matters.
  • Epic (NZD 985, 15+): the same abseil, then a wetsuit trip up the Mangapu streamway to a big glowworm display, with a packed lunch and a BBQ dinner. The operator says to allow 8–9 hours, and a reseller lists Wednesdays and Sundays. If it rains, the operator switches you to the Lost World 4 Hour plus Haggas.

Waitomo Adventures also runs St Benedict’s Caverns (12+, two abseils totalling 60 m plus a zipline; the operator’s page lists NZD 2,500 for a private group of up to eight) and Troll Cave, a weather-proof, fully accessible quest for children aged 1 and up that lasts 1–1.5 hours. All of these are booked on waitomo.co.nz.

Summer (November to February): crowds, booking and rain

  • Book ahead. Discover Waitomo says booking is “a big yes” for its busy season, December to March, and for school holidays. A reseller listing for the Glowworm Cave says it’s booked 35 days in advance on average, and Spellbound says its morning trips fill first. Our guide to Waitomo at Christmas and New Year covers the holiday weeks.
  • Check in 30 minutes early. Discover Waitomo’s terms say late or missed tours are forfeited and not refunded.
  • Cancellation. Discover Waitomo bookings made direct can be cancelled by phone more than 24 hours before the tour for a refund; within 24 hours, you get nothing back. If the operator cancels for weather, you get a full refund. A 2% card fee applies on direct bookings. GetYourGuide listings usually offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Our page on rain, cancellations and refunds has the detail.
  • How rain affects each tour: Troll Cave (weather-proof), the Lost World Half Day (dry), Ruakuri and the Glowworm Cave are the least affected. The river and wet trips are the most affected: Spellbound runs on a natural river and cancels if it’s forecast to flood, black water rafting is cancelled if prolonged heavy rain raises the water, and the Lost World Epic switches route. Waitomo Adventures says Haggas “is seldom affected by flooding.”
  • Closures: Ruakuri and Legendary’s rafting trips close on 25 December, Spellbound on 25 and 26 December, and the Kiwi House on 25 December.
  • What to wear: a warm jacket for the dry caves, since Discover Waitomo puts the Glowworm Cave at 16°C all year and Ruakuri at around 15°C. Bring swimwear and a towel for the wet trips. Our guide to what to wear at Waitomo Caves has the full list for each tour.

Free and cheap add-ons

  • DOC Ruakuri Walk (free): a 1 km loop of about 45 minutes through a limestone gorge to a natural tunnel. At night glowworms light the banks, and DOC says the best spot is beside the main bridge. There are many stairs, it isn’t wheelchair friendly, and you’ll need a torch. Switch the torch off only once you’re standing somewhere safe.
  • Mangapohue Natural Bridge, Marokopa Falls and Piripiri Cave (free, on Te Anga Road): a scenic loop west of the village. One walking blog says Mangapohue has even more glowworms at night than Ruakuri, though DOC doesn’t say so.
  • Ōtorohanga Kiwi House (about 15 minutes away): adult NZD 29.50, child (5–15) NZD 13.50, family (two adults and three children) NZD 75, under-5s free. It’s open 9am to 5pm daily except 25 December. Tickets are valid for two days, and kiwi talks run at 10:30am, 1:30pm and 3:30pm. Reviews are mixed on actually spotting a kiwi, so go at a talk time. Discover Waitomo sells a Cave & Kiwi combo.

Our list of things to do in Waitomo has the other walks and stops.

Which combos pay off

  • Good value: the Most Popular Combo (Glowworm Cave and Ruakuri, NZD 179) is the best pairing of a boat cave and a walking cave. The Kiwi House plus caves suits families.
  • Depends on your trip: the Twin Cave Combo (Glowworm Cave and Aranui, NZD 131) suits a budget itinerary if stairs are fine, and the Top Cave Combo (Ruakuri and Aranui, NZD 179) suits photographers who don’t need the boat. Both need Aranui to have reopened.
  • Skip: three show caves in one summer day. A Triple Cave Combo appeared on older Discover Waitomo pages but isn’t in the 2026–27 terms.
  • Our guides to Waitomo combo tours and what Waitomo costs have the full breakdown.

What reviewers love and complain about

  • Glowworm Cave: praise for the silent boat glide; complaints about the length for the price, crowds, the no-photo rule and the green-screen photo sold afterwards.
  • Ruakuri: praise for the guides, the scale and the access (one wheelchair user’s guide gave him a coat under a drip). Some reviewers say it runs closer to 2 hours.
  • Spellbound: praise for the small groups, the long raft ride, unhurried guides and free guide photos; now and then a complaint of fewer glowworms than expected.
  • Black Labyrinth: praised as fun; complaints that it’s colder and more physical than expected, about the group of 12, and about the photos being sold.
  • Okohua and Down to Earth: near-perfect ratings, driven by tiny groups and free photos.
  • Kiwi House: mixed reviews, because kiwi can be hard to spot.

FAQ

What is the best Waitomo cave tour? For most people, Spellbound’s Glowworm & Cave Explorer (NZD 109): a long raft ride under the glowworms, 12 people at most, photos allowed. For the famous original, the Glowworm Cave plus Ruakuri combo (NZD 179).

Which Waitomo cave has the most glowworms? Visitor reports most often name Spellbound. Among the Discover Waitomo caves, the Glowworm Cave grotto is the classic display, and Ruakuri shows them up close on foot.

Can you take photos in the Waitomo Glowworm Caves? No. Photos and video aren’t allowed in the Waitomo Glowworm Cave or on Legendary Black Water Rafting Co. tours. They are allowed in Ruakuri (in designated areas), Aranui and Spellbound.

Is Waitomo wheelchair accessible? Ruakuri Cave is. Discover Waitomo’s safety page allows wheelchairs and pushchairs up to 65 cm wide and 130 cm high, on walkways no steeper than 1:10. The Glowworm Cave and Aranui are not accessible.

What’s the minimum age for black water rafting in Waitomo? 12 for the Black Labyrinth and 16 for the Black Abyss, both with a 45 kg minimum and a 130 kg maximum. Okohua takes 12-year-olds with an adult, and the Lost World Half Day takes children from 10.

Do I need to swim for black water rafting? Legendary says swimming is “not a necessity” but you must be comfortable in water, and its health page recommends basic swimming ability. Okohua asks for confidence in deep or moving water.

Is the Waitomo Glowworm Cave a good choice on its own? Yes if you’re short on time or want the famous boat ride: it takes 45 minutes and costs NZD 85. With 2–3 hours, Spellbound or the Ruakuri combo gives you more time underground for the money.

Spellbound or the Waitomo Glowworm Cave? Spellbound for the glowworms, the group size and the photos. The Glowworm Cave for convenience and speed.

Black Labyrinth or Black Abyss? The Labyrinth (3 hours, 12+) is tubing and waterfall jumps. The Abyss (5 hours, 16+) adds a 35 m abseil, a zipline and waterfall climbs.

Is Waitomo OK for claustrophobic people? The Glowworm Cave and Spellbound are spacious. Ruakuri has one short section with a ceiling of about 130 cm. Avoid Haggas and the wet tubing trips.

Can I see Waitomo glowworms for free? Yes, on the DOC Ruakuri Walk after dark, best beside the main bridge.

Do Waitomo tours run in the rain? The dry show caves usually do, unless there’s flooding. River and wet trips may be cancelled, and the operator refunds you when it cancels.

Can kids under 4 go in the caves? Yes. They go free on Discover Waitomo tours but must be added to the booking. Spellbound publishes no minimum age and charges the child price for under-14s.
