Waitomo: Glowworm Caves Guided Tour by Boat

About This Experience
Discover New Zealand's natural wonder of Waitomo Glowworm Caves on a guided boat trip. Glide by boat through this underground complex, watching millions of tiny bioluminescent insects lighting up the rocky limestone. Explore this cave complex, including a chance to visit the Cathedral Cave on foot. The caves were formed over 30 million years ago and comprise 2 levels. The upper level is dry and includes the entrance to the cave and formations known as the Catacombs, the Pipe Organ, and the Banquet Chamber. On the lower level are stream passages and the Cathedral. Begin on foot as your local guide brings the caves to life with stories about their history. Frequently Asked Questions
Can children do this tour?
Yes — the boat tour is suitable for all ages. There are some steps on the walking sections, but nothing strenuous. Children under 4 are typically free.
Can I take photos?
Photography is not permitted in the Glowworm Grotto (the boat section) as camera flashes disturb the glowworms. You can photograph freely in the Cathedral and entrance chambers.
How dark is the cave?
The Glowworm Grotto is completely dark apart from the glowworms themselves — no torches or lights. The boat moves slowly and silently. Most people find it magical rather than frightening.
Is the experience the same in all weather?
Yes — the cave is underground and unaffected by surface weather. It maintains 13°C and the same glowworm display year-round. Rain does not affect the experience.
